BROADER IN musical conception than their previous albums, Head Music reflects two basic changes in Suede's working methods since Coming Up. The most obvious is the change of producer, Ed Buller being replaced here by Steve Osborne, Paul Oakenfold's partner in Perfecto, who naturally brings a more groove-oriented approach to the band's sound, which is slicker and smoother than before, and better reflects the band's "chemical generation" outlook.

First impressions of Scott Capurro are somewhat disarming: a sweet- looking, wholesome San Franciscan gay boy in stripey T-shirt and white jeans, flirting breezily with whoever takes his fancy. And then, just as you're relaxing to his seductive banter, he tells you about his 88- year-old granny's penchant for revealing her mastectomy scar, before adding with some relish, "Thank God she didn't have a hysterectomy." I'm certain it was him, loitering on the steps, asking "Tickets, please" of anyone who approached him: that bowl of hair, those sorrowful eyes, that matchstick frame, all seemed unmistakable. Could Bernard Butler really have been reduced to the indignity of doing front of house for his old band?

American punk bands like Offspring, Green Day and Rancid are at present cleaning up all over the world with a sound (selling millions of records) very similar to what British acts were producing in the late Seventies and early Eighties. Matthew Ashman, the former Adam and the Ants and Bow Wow Wow guitarist, who died aged 35 after being admitted to hospital with complications arising from diabetes, was one of the characters involved in the post-punk scene which spawned groups like Siouxsie and the Banshees and Culture Club. To this day, his distinctive Mohican hairstyle (no doubt influenced by Robert De Niro's look in Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver, 1976) is imitated by wannabe punk rockers the world over.
