Michelle Obama's emotional letter to her college-age self 'You're more than enough'

Michelle Obama has written a heartwarming letter to her younger self – and it includes references to her upbringing, her life as a first lady and her marriage.

“There aren’t many kids here who look like you”, she writes of her time at Princeton University, recalling how very few of her classmates came from similar ethnic backgrounds to her and how some of them arrived on campus in limousines while she remembers being dropped off by her father in “the family sedan”.

In the letter, published on CBS News, Obama reassures herself that she is “more than enough” in spite of fears that she wasn’t qualified to be enrolled at one of the most esteemed universities in the world.

She remembers how her parents encouraged her to embrace who she was and addresses the death of her father, Fraser C. Robinson III, who passed away when she was 27.

The now-54-year-old calls on her younger self to cherish his company and his words of advice, writing “his absence will hit you like a rock”.

“It’ll cause you to rethink everything about yourself and your future,” she adds. “But don’t worry, you won’t have to go through any of this alone.”

Next, she goes on to write about how her relationship with Barack would completely change her life and how his drive and determination would inspire her to pursue her own ambitions too.

“And he’s pretty good looking too,” she adds, playfully.

Though she notes there will be difficulties along the way in terms of finding a balance between family life and her husband’s presidency while maintaining a sense of self, she urges her younger self to have patience and to hold onto the values her parents taught her.

“Your family will make history,” she continues, “breaking barriers and filling out a more complete picture of the American story.”

She concludes the letter by reassuring her twentysomething self that there are so many other people with backgrounds similar to hers, and urges herself to share her experiences with them.

“You’re more than enough, Miche,” she adds. “You always have been and you always will be. And I can’t wait for you to see that.”
