Robert Rauschenberg: Tate Modern to host first UK exhibition of painter's work for 35 years

Show will be the first posthumous retrospective of his paintings and sculptures

The first posthumous retrospective of work by the American painter Robert Rauschenberg will feature in Tate Modern’s 2016 programme. It will be the first comprehensive show of his art in the UK for almost 35 years.

Organised in collaboration with New York’s Museum of Modern Art, it will open in December and will include a selection of his hybrid paintings and sculptures, which he called “combines”, as well as his graphic screen prints of the assassinated US President, John F Kennedy.

It will follow an exhibition of Georgia O’Keeffe’s work next summer, announced today among a new season of shows. O’Keeffe – best known for her paintings of enlarged flowers – will receive star summer billing at Tate Modern in the first large-scale show of her work in the UK for more than 20 years.

Tate Liverpool will host a show of 35 large-scale Francis Bacon paintings, and work by two British artists based on Paul Gauguin’s voyage to Tahiti will be exhibited at the gallery’s outpost in St Ives, Cornwall.
