Despite being the second Spider-Man reboot in recent memory, Homecoming has managed to win over cinema goers, having already grossed $472.8 million worldwide since release.

As a result, Marvel and Sony are reportedly looking to bring back director Jon Watts for the sequel, currently scheduled for release following the fourth Avengers.

According to Variety, Watts signed a contract that featured no mention of a sequel, despite having already extensively discussed potential future storylines with Sony and Marvel.

Sources told the publication that discussions over directing the second Tom Holland led Spider-Man heated up after other studios began offering the filmmaker other tentpole projects.

Watts co-wrote Homecoming with Jonathan Goldstein, John Francis Daley, Christopher Ford, Chris McKenna, and Erik Sommers — as-yet, it remains unclear whether the co-writers will also return.

The sequel’s villain was teased during Homecoming’s post-credits scene; the film ends **spoiler warning** with Michael Keaton’s Vulture in prison, speaking to another comic-book character, Mac Gargan — better known as The Scorpion — played by Michael Mando.

The character, itching his Scorpion tattoo, asks whether Vulture knows who the superhero really is, saying there are “friends on the outside” wanting revenge. Little more is shown than this small set-up, but having friends on the outside is relatively revealing. Could Gargan be referring to a team of villains, perhaps the Sinister Six?

There’s going to be a lengthy wait until the second Spider-Man film finally reaches cinemas on 5 July 2019. However, fans can catch Peter Parker in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War.
