Message to Henry Cavill: you've got company.

The CW's Supergirl is finally, officially introducing Superman to its second season (via Variety); after the first merely teased the hero from a distance, in blurry shots, or washed out with glares. Casting is currently underway to find the next Clark Kent/Kal-El, to play cousin to the show's titular heroine Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist).

A statement was released by executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, on behalf of the show's whole producing team, including Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler. "Greg, Ali and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world of Supergirl. Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season and we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape!"

A younger Kal-El (played by Daniel DiMaggio) was glimpsed in a dream sequence, with the adult hero playing a small role in the Season 1 finale; yet, this feels like the right time for the show to fully introduce the iconic hero into its narrative, having already granted itself the time to establish Supergirl as her own entity.

Rather fittingly, the show already features one previous iteration of Superman; Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman's Dean Cain has a recurring role as Kara's adoptive father Jeremiah Danvers.

The decision to introduce Kal-El also comes at a crucial crossroads for the show as a whole, with its move from CBS to The CW opening up opportunities for even more crossover opportunities from the likes of The Flash and Arrow. In fact, there's even the chance for yet another former Superman to pop up; with Superman Returns' Brandon Routh currently starring as Ray Palmer/The Atom on Legends of Tomorrow.

Cinema's own Superman, Henry Cavill, is set to return in Justice League, pitched for UK release on 17 November 2017.
