The Walking Dead season 7: Glenn actor Steven Yeun on his personal ambivalence about leaving the show

'I don’t know if I’ve fully processed it yet'

The Walking Dead’s season seven premiere was a brutally intense affair, filled with splattered heads and arms almost being chopped off.

For fan favourite Glenn, it was destined to be the end. Speaking immediately after the episode aired, actor Steven Yeun revealed on The Talking Dead how - ever since seeing Glenn’s death in the original comic book pages - he wanted the character to die the same way. As we now know, Negan was more than happy to oblige.

“I don’t know if I’ve fully processed it yet,” Yeun said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, opening up about his personal anguish over leaving the AMC show. “This is something that will hit me maybe a couple of months from now. Or maybe it’ll hit me next year. Maybe it’ll be when I’m 45 and all of a sudden I’m just crying in my kitchen and I can’t explain why.

“At that point, it was beautiful in that it was so easy for me to get emotional. Personally, for me, I’m not one to cry all the time. I don’t cry much in real life. And when you do not cry in real life, the moments that you do cry are very, very fulfilling and cathartic. You realise, maybe I should cry more in general.”

The actor went on to describe how confusing the entire situation was, feeling relief that he had achieved so much in the role, yet sadness in knowing he won’t work with The Walking Dead’s team again in the same capacity. He added: “I didn’t know how to place a lot of it because I had to keep it secret.”
