A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel is underway, following the success of the film’s opening weekend which has amassed an estimated $28.7 million.

Michael Bay will work with Andrew Form and Brad Fuller to produce the film, while Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec will return as screenwriters.

The provisional release date is 3 June 2016.

“Launching a new take on the Turtles into the feature film world was a daunting task because, as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before,” said Paramount president Adam Goodman.

“The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story.”

The initial Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film stars Megan Fox and Will Arnett and is out at cinemas now.

Despite its warm reception from the public, critics have branded the release “bland”, “unoriginal” and “dull-witted”.
