Chrissy Metz makes singing debut at ACM Awards

Chrissy Metz made her live singing debut on Sunday at the Academy of Country Music Awards, with Carrie Underwood at her side.

The This Is Us star sang “I’m Standing with You”, from the forthcoming film Breakthrough (which hits theatres on 17 April in the US), in which she plays the lead role.

Metz has been heard singing on the acclaimed NBC drama before, but her performance at the ACM Awards on Sunday night marked her stage debut.

In addition to Underwood, she was joined by Lauren Alaina, Mickey Guyton, and the duo Maddie & Tae.

Metz, who was teary-eyed by the end of the emotional performance, told The Associated Press that music was her “first love”, at a time when she was “afraid of her own shadow”.

Underwood said she was “honoured” to share the stage with the Emmy-nominated actor.

Sunday’s ceremony saw Kacey Musgraves taking home two awards: Top Album for Golden Hour (for which she is credited as both artist and producer), and Female Artist of the Year.

Musgraves said the award “goes out to anyone woman, girl, or anybody really” who has been told “her perspective or style is too different”.

“Just stay at it. It’ll work out,” said Musgraves, who won four Grammys earlier this year, including Album of the Year and Best Country Album.
