The Goonies is getting an immersive theatre play

Fans of The Goonies may have been on a rollercoaster ride of emotions as far as a sequel is concerned, but the good news is that an immersive theatre play based on the 1985 family film is in the pipeline and this time, it sounds like it's actually going to happen.

Director Richard Donner has revealed that the "wonderful" new production will allow audiences to take part within "another year or so".

"We're going to do an off-Broadway [play]," he told Yahoo! Movies. "Do you know what immersion theatre is? Where there's no seats, the venue is you go into a warehouse and there's something happening in that warehouse and that's the play you've come to see, only you become part of it and you travel through with actors. It's very popular now."

The original Goonies movie followed a gang of outsiders from an Oregon neighbourhood called Goon Docks. When their homes come under threat of demolition, they find an ancient map and embark on a treasure hunt.

Donner sparked great excitement last year when he told a cameraman that the long-awaited sequel was finally heading to cinemas with a storyline by Steven Spielberg, who co-wrote the first movie. The cast had logged their interest in returning for a new plot set 30 years later and it was going to follow Mikey, Brand and the rest of the group's children.

While nothing more has come of this promise yet, Donner is still saying a strong "maybe" to The Goonies 2, so long as the team can get it right.

"If you do things fast and quick and easy, that's a disservice,"he said. "We have a lot of history that we're involved with and a lot of integrity that we have to keep to what once was, and lives a life of its own without destroying it.

"Maybe the powers that be are working on something."
