Game of Thrones season 7 episode 7 title: The unexpected characters 'The Dragon and the Wolf' could be referencing

It was previously assumed to be about Jon and Dany

HBO announced the title of this weekend's Game of Thrones season seven finale - which will be the longest episode to date - with many assuming it referenced two of the show's central characters - however, some are theorising that it actually references something else altogether.

'The Dragon and the Wolf' is widely believed to indicate that the episode will thrust Daenerys Targaryen - the dragon - and Jon Snow - the wolf (the sigil of House Stark) - front and centre for the long-anticipated reveal that Snow's father is, in fact, Rhaegar Targaryen making Dany his auntie.

Now, Vanity Fair reports that this could mean two things: one, the title is a direct reference to Jon Snow alone, considering his status as both Targaryen and Stark (Ned's sister, Lyanna) and secondly, it could actually refer to Rhaegar and Lyanna which would confirm that this weekend will finally reveal what has long been suspected.

Backing this up is the recent reports suggesting that Rhaegar Targaryen (the Prince “Raggar” Gilly was reading about a few episodes back) had been cast for what will be a flashback or perhaps a few scenes shown through the eyes of Bran. For instance, Aisling Franciosi, who made her debut in season six as Lyanna, began following actor Wilf Scolding on Twitter when production began last September who in turn began following key members of Thrones' production on Instagram.

Considering we're yet to see both characters, or indeed actors, in this season of Thrones, it's no stretch to assume we'll be glimpsing them in this weekend's finale.

Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have clearly been throwing people off the scent with several references this season alone to Ned Stark's offspring status as 'wolves' in Westeros.

Elsewhere, many fans are expecting the HBO series' seventh season to end with these three revelatory twists.

Game of Thrones airs in the US on HBO every Sunday where it is simulcast in the UK on Sky Atlantic at 2am. It is repeated that same evening on both Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
