Netflix to debut new Star Trek series worldwide

This follows the announcement the show would not be airing on broadcast television, but on CBS' on-demand subscription service

Good news for Trek fans!

Star Trek's return to the small screen was feared to be a rather limited one, first announced to only be airing on CBS' on-demand subscription service and thus essentially unavailable to those outside of the US. Thankfully, Netflix has now announced that it's obtained the international rights to the new series in 188 countries - excluding US and Canada, of course.

The new episodes will premiere on Netflix less than 24 hours after first appearing on CBS All Access, the network's own streaming platform; this follows from Netflix securing the rights to all 727 episodes of old Star Trek, including the original series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise. All episodes will be available around the world by the end of 2016.

The new series comes courtesy of Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller, 2009's Star Trek movie writer Alex Kurtzman, and Eugene Roddenberry, son of original Star Trek creator Gene.
