Maniac is the star-studded TV show set to be autumn's biggest must-watch

See Emma Stone and Jonah Hill in Netflix's unmissable new hit

Back in 2014, HBO series True Detective provided cast-iron proof that television is officially as good as anything you can see on a cinema screen. Its impressively-paced story unfolded over eight delectable episodes led by the mouthwatering pedigree of Hollywood talent (Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson).

New Netflix series Maniac is set to hammer home this point in similar fashion all over again. The plot is irresistibly zany: based on a Norwegian series from 2014, it follows two strangers — played by Jonah Hill, above, and Emma Stone, right — who are brought together after agreeing to trial a mysterious drug treatment said to cure heartbreak. Judging by the trailer, what ensues is a fantastical, thrilling tale that spans space and time in imaginatively cinematic ways; think Eternal Sunshine meets Inception by way of Black Mirror.

Each episode’s been directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga — the same man behind series — set to run for a manageable single season — has been written by Patrick Somerville who directed the most memorable episodes of The Leftovers, a little-seen drama series many deem to be one of the greatest TV shows of the decade.

That Somerville has now been let loose with his own show is a cause for excitement — and the fact you can watch from the comfort of your own sofa sets Maniac apart as autumn’s biggest must-watch.

Maniac will be available on Netflix on 21 September
