British Grand Prix LIVE: F1 result as Lewis Hamilton grabs late win after Max Verstappen crashes on lap one
Follow the fallout from Silverstone, where Hamilton triumphed despite a 10-second penalty
Lewis Hamilton won the Formula One British Grand Prix on Sunday after Max Verstappen crashed out on lap one after a coming-together with his title rival.
Championship leader Verstappen started in pole position at Silverstone after winning the inaugural F1 Sprint race on Saturday, but the Red Bull driver’s left rear tyre hit Hamilton’s front right tyre on the Copse corner on the opening lap, leading the Belgian to spin off the track and hit the barrier hard at approximately 180mph. Verstappen, who had won the last three grands prix ahead of Sunday’s event, emerged from his wrecked car and was checked by medical staff before being transported to a local hospital.
In the immediate aftermath of the crash, which resulted in Hamilton receiving a 10-second penalty, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc surged past the Briton and into the lead. A red flag followed, leading to a 40-minute suspension of racing, but Leclerc retained his focus for a standing restart and would retain his lead for 49 laps. Hamilton was hunting the Monegasque, however, and finally caught Leclerc on Copse with just two laps to go in a dramatic finish.
Hamilton saw out the final laps to record his third straight British GP victory, seventh in eight years, and eighth overall. In doing so, the defending champion – second in the drivers’ standings – closed the gap to Verstappen to eight points in the race for the title.
Follow the fallout from the Formula One British Grand Prix below.
F1 British Grand Prix: Lap 41
Hamilton is into second, ahead of teammate Bottas!
Can he catch leader Leclerc with nine laps to go?
Meanwhile, Vettel’s car will be retired following his spin in the restart earlier.
F1 British Grand Prix: Lap 39
Verstappen, per the FIA, has been transported to a local hospital.
He will continue to lead the drivers’ standings even if Hamilton wins today.
The Briton is in third at the moment and will receive a 10-second penalty for his role in Verstappen’s crash on lap one.
F1 British Grand Prix: Lap 34
So, Leclerc’s issue is down to “engine mapping”.
That’s not a mechanical problem, but rather a programming one.
Theoretically it will be easier to correct – or at least prevent from worsening.
The Ferrari man is still in front, 10 seconds ahead of Bottas.
F1 British Grand Prix: Lap 32
Norris isn’t able to keep Hamilton off him!
Hamilton is past him and into third.
F1 British Grand Prix: Lap 31
Leclerc is now seven seconds clear in the lead, with Bottas second.
Norris is third and Hamilton – who is a fan of his young compatriot – is behind the McLaren driver.
Can Norris keep the defending champion and defending race winner at bay?
F1 British Grand Prix: Lap 30
Oh, no! Sainz’s front left tyre just won’t tighten.
It’s a slow pit stop for him.
Moments later, Ferrari teammate Leclerc gets a 2.6second pit stop.
Much better for the race leader.
F1 British Grand Prix: Lap 28
Hamilton should be pitting any moment now. “Front left [tyre] is dead, man.”
F1 British Grand Prix: Lap 26
Sainz beats Leclerc’s fastest lap of the day, but Bottas beats that moments later!
We’re exactly halfway through the race.
F1 British Grand Prix: Lap 25
Norris is past Alonso! A good response by the McLaren driver after that slow pit stop.
F1 British Grand Prix: Lap 23
Now that’s how you carry out a pit stop. 2.2seconds for Mercedes’ Bottas.
He’ll drop to fifth for the time being... but not for long at all! He’s already past Fernando Alonso.
