Lewis Hamilton's career profile

Lewis Hamilton missed out on the world championship on Sunday evening as Kimi Raikkonen spoiled the party to clinch his first victory since March 2013.

Hamilton knew that a victory would have almost certainly secured him a fifth title, but Raikkonen gave him something to think about immediately as he took the lead into the first corner. However, Hamilton was still on for the championship as Sebastian Vettel spun on the opening lap, having made contact with Daniel Ricciardo.

But as Vettel fought back, Hamilton switched to a two-stop strategy that, ultimately, just fell short in getting him in to the second place that he needed as Max Verstappen came through the field to take second place with a phenomenal drive from 18th place on the grid.

The results means that while Hamilton is not yet the 2018 world champion, Vettel must win all three of the remaining races this season to stand any chance of stopping the Mercedes driver, who only needs seventh place in Mexico next time out to secure his victory.

Lap 31: Will Hamilton pit again? He's holding the lead at 17 seconds over Raikkonen, and with a pit stop expected to cost around 20 seconds, pitting for a second time would see him drop behind the Ferrari but give him a fresh new set of boots that would almost certainly be faster than Raikkonen.

Lap 32: One issue for Hamilton is that he doesn't have any super-soft tyres remaining this weekend, and he's dropped 1.5s over the last lap to Raikkonen whose started catching.

Lap 33: That's it for Leclerc as he brings the Sauber into the pits to retire. A shame for the Monogasue after that first-lap contact.

Lap 34: Hamilton's lead is melting away here, and Raikkonens taken nearly two seconds on that last lap. Mercedes need to pit Hamilton now as his lead is evaporating.

Lap 36: 20 laps to go and Raikkonen has the lead down to 10 seconds, meaning he's taken seven seconds out of Hamilton in just four laps. Mercedes clearly aren't planning on pitting Hamilton, but now Hamilton is complaining of his tyres fading. Are they running for second place given that Vettel isn't fourth? Verstappen is only three seconds behind Raikkonen.

Lap 37: Hamilton pits! Why oh why have Mercedes waited so long? However, this gives him a chance as he comes out in fourth. Bottas will not stand in his way, and then it's a case of can he get past Verstappen?

Lap 37: So Hamilton is on a fresh set of soft tyres, and he needs to effectively put together 19 qualifying laps in a row if he wants to hunt down Raikkonen. The Finn is currently 13 seconds ahead of Hamilton, so it's a tough ask.
