Welsh chocolatier selling giant hand-painted Easter egg for £1,500

The creation took Emma Baravelli one week to complete

A Welsh chocolatier is selling a giant hand-painted Easter egg for £1,500.

Emma Baravelli, who runs artisan chocolatier Baravelli’s in Conwy, North Wales with her husband Mark designs intricate chocolate eggs that take hours of work to create.

And the couple’s hard work is paying off because their confectionery creations have proved such a hit they are now being sold at luxury department store Fortnum and Mason.

The Baravelli's giant Easter egg, which depicts Fortnum and Mason's trademark eau-du-nil hot air balloon and the London skyline, has been chosen to sit, pride of place, in the store's Easter display.

In total, the design took Baravelli an entire week to complete, and it has now been given a price tag of £1,500.

A fixture in Piccadilly since 1707, Fortnum and Mason boasts an impressive roster of famous customers including the Queen, Prince of Wales and Charles Dickens.

The retailer has also ordered a total of 210 smaller eggs from the Welsh chocolatier, which have all been hand painted with a choice of three styles – a chick, chicken or a cockerel – and cost £85 each.

An additional 250 Easter eggs can also be found at high end department store Selfridges, where they are being sold for £29.99.

“It was quite nerve-racking packing the giant egg for Fortnum's, but luckily it got there in one piece, and we've been down to see it and it looks really good,” Mrs Baravelli told the Daily Post.

“We've been told that quite a few celebs have bought the Fortnum eggs but the member of staff who told us wasn't allowed to say who.''

Mr and Mrs Baravelli will star in a new Channel 4 10-part series called Extreme Chocolate Makers, starting on April 22.

The series traces an elite group of chocolatiers as they work to produce the world’s most breath-taking chocolate creations.
