Could you make the San Miguel Rich list?

San Miguel has a rich history of exploration, which has led them to track down people around the world who pursue a different kind of wealth. And now they want you to find your rich too

Together these kindred spirits form the San Miguel Rich List – a unique group of men and women who value experiences over possessions.

Now entering its third year, San Miguel is again searching for people who march to the beat of their own drum: not chasing materialism, but rather a way of living that’s exciting and rewarding on a personal level. They want to discover people who have taken a different route, chosen a different kind of wealth. People who have found their rich.

Below are three examples from last year: could you – or someone you know – play a part this time around?

James Marr, bike builder

“Often in life you’re not quite allowed to do what you want,” claims James Marr, founder of the Bamboo Bicycle Club (above). “The way mass consumption works puts limits on. There may be a few different colours or shapes, but there are only a few set options. We’re pushing back against that.” James now teaches people to make robust, eco-friendly and unique push bikes on special weekend courses. “I’m not a desk-sitter, so this is my ideal job,” he says. “Every day is different, and I’m always tinkering with prototypes.”

Kendra Haste, sculptor

This renowned sculptor’s works are incredibly patient constructions: she uses galvanised wire to recreate delicate, intricate animals from the spine outwards. “I start by observing,” Kendra (above) says. “I’m lucky enough to have travelled to Africa and India to look at animals in their natural habitat. What I love is trying to capture the spirit and essence of an animal. It’s very fulfilling.” Her work helps conservation projects, too. “Animals have been my big passion, so raising awareness to help species in danger is lovely.”

(Jody Daunton)

VC London, motorbike club

This capital collective have changed attitudes towards women on motorbikes. Fashion designer Gemma Harrison and her friends started an Instagram page documenting their horsepower adventures, and it hit home. “We discovered there were lots of girls who’d love to learn to ride, so we started teaching them, for free, and it’s turned into this supportive community,” says Gemma (above, right). “It’s not a reaction to anything – biking is very friendly. I love the freedom, and clearing my head. We help each other, rather than compete.”
