‘I am still young and dumb and learning’: Model Lottie Moss apologises for saying she was a ‘super spreader’

After Internet users were angered at her coronavirus ‘joke’, the model has said she is ‘sorry’ for being ‘insensitive’

Model Lottie Moss has apologised for joking that she was a “super spreader” of coronavirus and said she is “young, dumb and learning”.

Kate Moss' half-sister was on Instagram Live on Saturday when she made the “joke” with friends.

After kissing one of her friends and showing her lip tattoo, the model put on an American accent to the camera and said “yeah, we’re like super spreading Covid”, as she read comments coming up on her screen.

Social media users were angered by her insensitive words, one saying it's like she was putting up her “middle finger to all NHS and front line workers”, another said; “Wow. Lottie Moss has drunkenly announced she’s a super spreader, while laughing, on her social media … while people can’t hold the hands of loved ones as they pass away. What a tone-deaf, entitled, spoilt little brat."

Moss has since posted: “I just want to come on here and say I am so sorry for saying that I was a super spreader,” she said on Instagram. “Someone on the live popped up saying those words and I repeated them as a joke because I am not and would condone spreading a virus as serious as this.”

After being branded a “Covidiot” by social media users, the model explained that during pandemic she has otherwise acted responsibly and was out for dinner with her “support bubble”.

“I was out for dinner with four friends, three of which are in the same household and live under the government guidelines – as I live alone – I’m allowed a support bubble of four,” said the model.

“I understand this has upset a lot of people and I wanted to apologise for making such an insensitive joke.”

The 22-year-old model followed her sincere apology with another comment: “I am still young and dumb and learning – I sometimes forget that I am a public figure and during these crazy and uncertain times I should have been more careful with my words.”

Taken after dinner at London's Marylebone’s Xier restaurant, the video appeared to be shot at a private residence. Under government coronavirus guidelines, a support bubble links two households. Those eligible to form a bubble include one single-adult household. 

The Instagram Live was done before the announcement that London will move up to tier 3 due to increasing coronavirus cases.

Lottie Moss has worked with brands Calvin Klein, Topshop, and Red Valentino. She’s previously dated Sam Prince and Alex Mytton from Channel 4’s Made in Chelsea, plus Capital FM DJ Roman Kemp, she recently came out as “pansexual”.
