A British man, who played the role of a Somali pirate opposite Tom Hanks in the award-winning film Captain Phillips last year, has been jailed for the brutal assault of a man.

Mohammed Abdi, 27, was found guilty of the attack, which left his victim with fractured cheeks and suffering from a brain haemorrhage, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Along with two accomplices, Abdi kicked the man in the head and dragged him into a car outside a chicken shop at 6am on 2 March 2014 in Rushholme, Manchester.

Abdi had been involved in a separate attack in August, during which he slashed a man’s arm with a bottle at a bakery in front of staff and customers.

Abdi’s lawyer, David Temkin, told Manchester Crown Court that there was “another side” to his client, and said it was a “great shame” to see him facing jail after enjoying the “privileged’ nine week experience of filming in Morocco after being cast in the Hollywood blockbuster.

“It's a whisker between behaviour of this sort and death,” the judge, who admitted to being a fan of the film, said during sentencing. “But you were completely unmindful of that.”

He sentenced the actor to two-and-a-half years imprisonment for the crime, which he branded “deplorable”.

Mohammed Omar Ali, 33, and Hamid Hassan, 27, pleaded guilty to GBH and were each sentenced to two years.
