Rupert Murdoch and Jerry Hall wedding: Who was notably absent from the event?

David Cameron, Tony Blair and Andy Coulson did not attend the weekend nuptials

While the wedding of Rupert Murdoch and Jerry Hall attracted many famous names varying from cabinet ministers to actors, there were some who were notably missing.

Murdoch and Hall had a second ceremony on Saturday morning at St Bride’s Church on Fleet Street following their first official ceremony in London on Friday.

Around 100 guests were expected to attend and pictured arriving to the “the Journalist’s Church” on Saturday included Sir Bob Geldof, Sir Michael Caine, Tracey Emin, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Michael Gove and Priti Patel.

But there were also a few who were notably absent.

The Prime Minister David Cameron was one. Part of the “Chipping Norton set”, his closeness to the Murdoch empire came to light in 2012 after the revelation Cameron had 26 meetings in 15 months with senior News International staff. His friendship with Rebekah Brooks (who was at the ceremony) was made public after she told the Leveson inquiry he would sign off text messages as “DC” and occasionally “LOL” for “lots of love”.

A former Prime Minister was also absent in the form of Tony Blair. Murdoch’s paper The Sun famously backed Blair and ‘New Labour’ in 1997 and then every consequential election he stood. Blair is godfather to Murdoch’s daughter Grace whose mother is Wendi Deng, the person whose friendship with Blair allegedly ended his friendship with Murdoch.

Former News of the World editor Andy Coulson was also not in attendance. Coulson was found guilty of conspiracy to hack phones in 2014 and jailed for 18 months. Coulson, who was also director of communications for Mr Cameron, was released less than five months later in November, 2014.

Mick Jagger also wasn’t there but this is probably unsurprising given that he is the former partner of Hall. The two had a relationship which spanned two decades and had four children together, Elizabeth, James, Georgia May and Gabriel Luke. While Jagger wasn’t in attendance, his former wife Bianca and their daughter Jade were.

Other politicians that didn't attend were George Osborne and Boris Johnson.
