UK Weather latest live updates: Yellow warnings for snow issued across Britain amid more wintry showers

Falling snow in Whiltey Bay, as heavy snowfall across parts of the UK is causing widespread disruption, closing roads and grounding flights at an airport (PA)

The Met Office has issued a Yellow weather warning across Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of England and Wales following another cold night that saw temperatures drop below zero.

Ice is expected to form on stretches of untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths from Wednesday afternoon through to well into Thursday morning.

Wintry showers will also spread from the west, with some snow expected at higher parts of western Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Temperatures in parts of the UK dropped to below those in Moscow on Tuesday, with the mercury registering as low as -13C in Shropshire.

Dozens of schools in the South West, West Midlands and Wales have also kept their gates closed for a third day following the bitterly cold conditions.

Age UK Lancashire is reminding people to make sure older people in your neighbour are safe and have sufficient supplies amid the cold snap.

Professor Jane Cummings, Chief Nursing Officer for England, has warned about the impact of cold weather on older people.

She said: “Loneliness has a devastating and life-threatening impact on people of all ages. For vulnerable groups, social isolation combined with the health dangers of colder weather, is a lethal combination. NHS staff see first-hand the consequences of loneliness, from dealing with life-threatening and serious illness to offering a lifeline to those to simply wanting a see a friendly face.

We can all take steps to alleviate loneliness by looking out for family, friends and neighbours. These simple acts of companionship could be life-saving.”
