One person dead with a 'self inflicted' gun wound following YouTube shooting, police say

Hundreds of people rushed to evacuate the California headquarters of YouTube after a shooter opened fire, leaving at least three people injured and one woman — the suspected shooter — dead, police said.

Officers could be seen in video patting down people as they left from the San Bruno base of the video-streaming giant, which sits in Silicon Valley at the heart of America's premier tech hub.

The San Francisco General Hospital has taken in an unknown number of patients from the shooting incident, according to local news station KCBS.

Spokesman Brent Andrew said a 36-year-old man was in critical condition, a 32-year-old woman was in serious condition, and a 27-year-old woman was in fair condition.

"Was just briefed on the shooting at YouTube's HQ in San Bruno, California," Donald Trump tweeted after the shooting.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with everybody involved. Thank you to our phenomenal Law Enforcement Officers and First Responders that are currently on the scene."

Employees in the headquarters tweeted about the shooting soon after it started, describing a chaotic scene in which the tech workers attempted to blockade themselves inside of rooms for safety.

San Bruno police say that they encountered four people with gunshot wounds in or near YouTube HQ. One of those individuals, who police believe was the shooter, had a self-inflicted wound and was dead.

Chief Ed Barberini told reporters during a press conference that they were not sure of the extent of the other victims' injuries, and that the investigation is ongoing.

The individual with a self-inflicted wound was a female, he said.

A production manager at YouTube has tweeted that he saw blood when he was evacuating the site, and that the initial rumblings of people rushing to leave felt like an earthquake before he was told it was an active shooter.

"At that point every new person I saw was a potential shooter. Someone else said that the person shot out the back doors and then shot themselves," Todd Sherman, the production manager, wrote on Twitter.

He later updated his posts to say he was in an Uber going home.
