Ryan Garcia reflects on Devin Haney performance

Ryan Garcia suffered a nightmare loss to Rolly Romero on Friday, potentially leaving his planned rematch with Devin Haney in tatters.

Garcia was dropped by Romero in round two and ultimately beaten on points, moments after Haney won a decision against Jose Ramirez in the very same ring in New York City.

After Haney’s victory, a triumph for Garcia would have set up a rematch of their 2024 clash, in which “King Ryan” dropped the “Dream” three times en route to a decision win, which was overturned upon the revelation that Garcia had failed a pre-fight drug test. That bout took place at super-lightweight, while the 26-year-olds made their welterweight debuts on Friday (2 May), with mixed results.

Haney won a wide decision against fellow former world champion Ramirez (119-109, 119-109, 118-110), yet he looked almost as gun-shy as the 32-year-old. Haney appeared hesitant for much of the bout, perhaps due to his disastrous evening against Garcia last time out, although he did grow into the fight with Ramirez.

In any case, Haney did enough to secure the victory and stay unbeaten, which is more than can be said of Garcia, who suffered his second professional loss. All the action took place in Times Square, the heart of New York City, where Teofimo Lopez outpointed Arnold Barboza Jr earlier in the night. Re-live the fights below.

Round 10

Ramirez jabs to the body, Haney fires back with a jab up top.

Left hook, hard right cross by Haney!

Grazing left hook from Ramirez, before he and Haney tie up near the ropes.

Short cross by Haney. Ramirez chases him around the ring but misses with some telegraphed efforts.

Round nine

Ramirez with a combination as he backs Haney up against the ropes, better from the Californian.

Lovely cross from Haney, who then steps away on the angle. Now a left hook as Ramirez bears down on him.

Another left hook. Double-jab, right cross. Left hook again.

Haney has certainly grown into this fight. Maybe he just needed some time to get comfortable after what happened against Garcia last year.

Round eight

Haney bursts forward with a cross and a left straight.

Decent lead uppercut from the Dream now, and a long rear hook to the body.

Left hook while going backwards. This is better from Haney!

Round seven

The sight of Haney planting his feet for a jab and left hook is almost startling. That’s how low on action the bout has been, and how anxiously mobile Haney has seemed.

Still, he’s winning!

Round six

Ramirez has a bit of a cut under his left eye now, seemingly from a jab.

Oh! A hook barely misses Haney, whose eyes widened there...

Haney with a one-two-three. He goes to the body afterwards.

Round five

After four rounds, Ramirez has landed 12 of 82 punches, per the broadcast; Haney has landed 17 of 72.

Haney connects with a cross now, then a power jab.

Ramirez tries to get going, but his offence leads to a clinch, and the ref separates the fighters.

Round four

The pattern of the fight continues. Neither man is especially impressive at the moment.

Haney is at least starting to throw more, round by round.

Ramirez tries to swarm Haney against the ropes, but he doesn’t land clean in a frantic moment.

As disappointing as Haney has been, Ramirez has been worse.

Round three

That velcro, which wasn’t strapping on Haney’s shoe, has been taped, and they’ve taped the other shoe as well. Not ideal, but hopefully it helps him.

Nice lead left hook from Haney. He misses with a right, and Ramirez lands in the pocket.

Jab, left hook from Haney. Ramirez, 32, continues to hunt the younger boxer, 26.

Grazing right cross from Haney, who still looks a bit nervy.

Round two

No adjustment made to Haney’s shoe. Ramirez gets right after him again.

“Fight him in the freezer,” was the advice from Bill Haney – Devin’s father and coach – after round one. Whatever that meant, Haney is still throwing barely any punches.

He eventually lets go with a couple of jabs, and a decent left hook. He misses with the next left hook, but at least he’s opening up.

Nice right cross from Haney!

Dark skies overhead in NYC now.

Round one

Both men stand orthodox. Ramirez presses forward early.

Very little thrown by either man after 90 seconds.

Haney is skipping away from Ramirez, but his movements are maybe a bit exaggerated – a little erratic.

Ramirez misses with a wild right hand. Haney isn’t even throwing the jab.

One of Haney’s shoe straps seems to be undone, and as silly as it sounds, I wonder if that’s bothering him.
