Chelsea and Liverpool played out one of the games of the Premier League season with a pulsating draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

Thomas Tuchel's decision to drop Romelu Lukaku following the airing of a controversial interview this week dominated pre-match discussions before it was revealed Alisson, Roberto Firmino and Joel Matip had joined Jurgen Klopp in being ruled out of the contest with suspected positive Covid tests.

Sadio Mane gave the visitors the perfect start, however, with a well-taken opening goal before Mohamed Salah doubled the Reds' lead with a fine run and finish.

Mateo Kovacic went one better, though, finding the net with a sumptuous volley from the edge of the area before Christian Pulisic netted what proved to be the equaliser just before half-time.

Both teams pushed for winners in the second period but it wasn't to be with the main beneficiaries proving to be title rivals Manchester City, who now sit 10 points clear at the top of the table.

25 attempts, 12 on target. Yet somehow neither side managed more than 1.5 expected goals?! Chelsea - 1.44, Liverpool - 1.35.

Felt like a 5-5 game.

Liverpool were 2-0 up. Chelsea could have gone into half-time 3-2 ahead. Liverpool went close to a winner. Chelsea went close to a winner. A draw probably the right result.

The first half was always going to be difficult to live up to. It was still just as frenetic after the break but in the final 20 minutes dropped off quite substantially as both sides showed they are human and can feel tiredness.

Nevertheless, a wonderful game of Premier League football.

The shares are spoiled. A breathtaking first half saw goals from Sadio Mane and Mo Salah cancelled out by strikes from Mateo Kovacic and Christian Pulisic.

Both sides looked for a winner in the second half but it wasn’t to be. A sensational game of football ends all square as Manchester City move 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

90+3 mins: Henderson tries to work the ball into Salah inside the Chelsea penalty area but it runs out of play before he can do anything with it.

Goal kick. That could be that.

Chelsea 2-2 Liverpool

90+2 mins: It’s Liverpool who have found a second, third, fourth wind at the end of this game. But they don’t look too likely to score.

At the end of all of this - the entertainment, the goals, the shock, the awe - it may well be Manchester City who are celebrating.

90+1 mins: Tsimikas gets past Pulisic and forces a corner but the Liverpool left-back’s delivery is dreadful and Chelsea’s first man is able to clear.

90 mins: SUB! Sadio Mane makes way for Curtis Jones. A clear sign Liverpool are now happy to settle for a point.

A reminder that this is excellent news for defending champions Manchester City. They will still hold a 10-point lead over second place Chelsea as it stands.
