Arsenal: Mikel Arteta comments on Odegaard's performance in Brighton win

Arsenal’s Premier League title charge was checked as the leaders could find no way through third-placed Newcastle United in a disappointing 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium.

Victory would have given Arsenal a 10-point lead but they had to make do with a point against a rock-solid Newcastle who defended superbly to remain unbeaten since August.

The closest the hosts came to breaking the deadlock was in the 87th minute when Newcastle keeper Nick Pope made a great save to keep out a low shot by Eddie Nketiah while Arsenal also had a vociferous late penalty claim waved away.

Newcastle, who have the stingiest defence in the top flight this season, were content to sit deep for most of the evening although Joelinton wasted a good opportunity before the break.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

70 mins: There’s no way through the Newcastle defence for Arsenal. Gabriel Martinelli’s corner ball is headed down and cleared by the Magpies who haven’t offered Arsenal a sniff since the second half started.

They’ve got the best defensive record in the league for a reason.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

67 mins: Eddie Howe is the first manager to switch things up as Chris Wood and Jacob Murphy are introduced to replace Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron.

Wood is more of a targetman so that change may provoke a more direct approach to goal for Newcastle.

Goals! There’s been a few goals at Goodison Park and none have gone in favour of the hosts.

Brighton have added three goals to their 1-0 lead at half-time and are now 4-0 in front of Everton with around 30 minutes left to play.

It’s a demolition of Frank Lampard’s side.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

58 mins: Joelinton is the third Newcastle United player to go in the book after taking down Saka on the edge of the Newcastle box. Almiron quickly joins him there after encroaching on the set piece take whilst being part of the wall.

The referee has lost control of the game in many ways. He’s shown too many yellow cards.

Saka’s delivery comes to nothing for Arsenal.
