Match Preview: Aston Villa vs West Ham on 31/10/2021

West Ham won 4-1 at Aston Villa to move into the top four in the Premier League and round off a wonderful week for David Moyes’ side.

The Hammers defeated London rivals Tottenham last weekend and reached the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup with a penalty shoot-out victory against holders Manchester City, before putting 10-man Villa to the sword.

Villa boss Dean Smith will feel everything that could go wrong did go wrong as his team slipped to a fourth successive Premier League defeat.

Long-range strikes from Ben Johnson and Declan Rice saw Moyes’ men head into half-time in front, after Ollie Watkins had equalised for the hosts.

Ezri Konsa’s red card shortly after the break gave Villa an uphill task and further goals from Pablo Fornals and Jarrod Bowen inside the final 10 minutes settled the contest. Follow all the reaction live below:

Dean Smith, speaking to Sky Sports: “I don’t think we deserved the 4-1 beating at home. The first 15 minutes we lacked some intensity, it was a poor goal that we conceded, but the response was good. I think Rice has hit better strikes and we probably think we could get a block or a save on that one.

“The sending off is incorrect. I’ve been to see Chris Kavanagh and I asked him why he overturned his original decision. He said the ball was going towards goal but it wasn't and Ashley Young was coming in on the cover. They’ve got to get decisions right - that’s what VAR is for. He wasn’t through on goal - that’s the annoying part of that. When we conceded the third goal we only had eight outfield players on the pitch.

“I’m always concerned when we lose any game but I’ve got confidence in the squad that we can turn it around. There are things that go against you but you have to get on with it.”

Here’s David Moyes, who is enjoying life in the Premier League with his side flying high inside the top four.

“Four goals, four different goalscorers, that pleased me. A bit of resilience at different points in the game, a good save from Fabianski at 2-1. There were things I wasn’t pleased about. We didn’t pass the ball as well as we have done in previous games. But it’s a good sign that we can come here and be a little bit disappointed with the way we played but still had a good victory.

“It’s been a great week, but in football it can quickly turn around and bite you in the bum. We’ve done the job and we’ll go again on Thursday. We have to be back on it because I don’t want West Ham to go back to that flaky, inconsistent team which a lot of people remember West Ham for. I’ve got to change that.

“The players deserve a lot of credit and we are improving. I think we can do more, but we’re doing a lot things really well.”

Another outstanding performance from Declan Rice today, who continues to flourish in the heart of the West Ham midfield. Here’s Dan Austin’s take on the 22-year-old’s old-fashioned, all-action style, which was on full display at Villa Park.

Really great interviews from Declan Rice and Ben Johnson, who were speaking to Sky Sports:

Rice: “It’s a special group, a special environment at the moment. Everyone is enjoying going into training. We’re over the moon to win today.

“[Goals] are something I know I can add to my game. I’ve got four for the season now, including England. It’s special to score - especially away from home.

“To be honest. we won 4-1 but we were sloppy in the second half. We gave the ball away a lot and I know the manager won’t be happy with it.

“I think we’re joint third now in the Premier League. There were questions about us playing in Europe and whether we could handle the rotations, but I think we’ve showed we can. We’re only 10 games in but we need to stay at it now. If we want to be a big team, we can’t drop it.”

Johnson: “It’s unbelievable, winning emphatically like that. Coming through the academy, we’re worked for years for that. Mic [Antonio] told me in training to go for goal with my left foot. I tried it against City and again today, and it worked. I’m enjoying [being in the team] - I’ve thought I’ve done ok. Hopefully we can continue it.”

West Ham hit four goals for the third time in the Premier League this season - and Michail Antonio wasn’t even on the scoresheet!

No wonder David Moyes was asked about his side being called the Premier League’s “great entertainers” before tonight’s match.

West Ham’s dream start to the season continues with a big win over 10-man Aston Villa, as David Moyes’ side return to fourth place in the Premier League.

The Hammers are going strong on three fronts and wrapped up their latest win with two late goals from Fornals and Bowen, after Konsa was sent off for Villa shortly after the restart.

Villa’s tough run continues as Dean Smith’s side slip to their fourth defeat in a row. His changes did not work today and they will look to bounce back away to Southampton on Friday night.

After a mid-week trip to Genk in the Europa league, West Ham welcome Liverpool to the London Stadium next Sunday - what a match that is going to be!

90 mins: West Ham make two late changes as Vlasic and Coufal come on for Bowen and Fornals.

There will be four minutes added time - which is not what Villa fans wanted to see.

87 mins: Lanzini curls a free kick wide, with Martinez beaten in the Villa goal.

Until the 80th minute, I really didn’t think West Ham had played that well against the 10 men of Villa. But Moyes’ side found their clinical edge when they needed it most to put the match beyond Dean Smith’s side, who are heading to a fourth consecutive defeat.

Villa Park has emptied as West Ham fans ring out the ‘oles!’ at every pass.
