A rampant, ruthless Barcelona produced a scintillating attacking performance to sweep aside Real Madrid 5-2 and secure the Spanish Super Cup.

The two rivals had set up an El Clasico with silverware on the line and it proved a captivating affair, with two dynamic forward lines showcasing their ability. Rocked early by a delightful Kylian Mbappe goal against the run of play, the Catalan club nonetheless ripped Real to ribbons in the first half with Raphinha, Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski to the fore as Pedri and Gavi pulled the strings.

Four first-half goals were followed by a fifth from the Barcelona captain just after the interval, putting them out of sight despite Wojciech Szczesny’s sending off. The goalkeeper saw red for a challenge on Mbappe after the Frenchman had surged away from the defence, and though Rodrygo converted the resulting free kick past replacement Inaki Pena, the defending champions had been left with too much to do on the same day that they lost top spot in La Liga to cross-city rivals Atletico.

Re-live all of the action from the final in our live blog below:

Real Madrid 1-5 Barcelona, 55 minutes

Kylian Mbappe is mightily perplexed as the referee does not give him a free kick having knocked the ball by Wojciech Szczesny - and even more so when Vinicius Jr is booked for his rather aggressive appeal.

But the refereee is once again being asked over to the screen for a VAR review. Did Szczesny just get a touch on Mbappe’s toe? It’s’ outside the area, but it could be a red if so...

GOAL! Real Madrid 1-5 BARCELONA (Raphinha, 48 minutes)

It’s five!

Barcelona can’t quite believe it! They are tearing Real Madrid apart in the Spanish Super Cup final.

It’s another gem of a goal, taking advantage of a flippant, foolish high line from Real Madrid. Raphinha gets beyond it and then twists and turns poor Aurelien Tchouameni like a Gordian Knot. Long before the defender can disentangle himself, Raphinha has found the corner and Barcelona a fifth goal.

HT: Real Madrid 1-4 Barcelona

Blimey. Despite being rocked early by Kylian Mbappe’s opener, Barcelona have been outstanding in Jeddah, producing a delightful display of attacking football to rip Real Madrid to ribbons. They’ve scored four and could have had more.

GOAL! Real Madrid 1-4 BARCELONA (Alejandro Balde, 45 + 10 minutes)

Barcelona finish the half in some style! A quite brilliant counter-attacking strike!

Real Madrid throw men forward as they hunt for a route back into this final. That leaves them caught desperately short at the back as Lamine Yamal cuts out a pass. Some superfluous footwork from the teenager nonetheless buys time for Raphinha to accelerate to full sprinting speed, the Brazilian latching on to a forward pass and then waiting for Alejandro Balde to overlap. Onwards the left back goes, beating Thibaut Courtois to cap a magnificent. first half performance.

Real Madrid 1-3 Barcelona, 45 + 8 minutes

Top save from Thibaut Courtois, perhaps initially surprised by the ambitious shot from an acute angle by Alejandro Balde, but reacting well to turn it over the crossbar. That was travelling, too - a real finger stinger.

Courtois then welcomes the resulting corner into his safe embrace.

Real Madrid 1-3 Barcelona, 45 + 5 minutes

A sniff of a chance for Rodrygo as Lucas Vazquez’s backheel ricochets kindly for the Brazilian, but Barcelona smother it.
