Brentford vs Liverpool LIVE: Premier League result and reaction after Darwin Nunez double snatches victory

Arne Slot’s side will be hoping to return to winning ways after a draw against Nottingham Forest

Arne Slot happy to see Liverpool competing with Premier League big spenders

Darwin Nunez struck twice in stoppage time to save Liverpool from another Premier League slip up as a resolute Brentford were denied a point late on.

The hosts appeared set to force Arne Slot’s side to settle again for a draw as they held firm at the Gtech Community Stadium. But substitute Nunez had other ideas, scoring twice in the final minutes to leave the league leaders grateful again for the impact of their bench. Dominik Szoboszlai had earlier struck the bar amid a flurry of chances with Liverpool exceptionally wasteful.

But just as Diogo Jota, absent in London with an injury, had snatched a point against Nottingham Forest, Nunez proved his worth having been introduced by Slot. Speculation had mounted over the forward’s future this week with his manager admitting he had not got the best out of the Uruguayan - but this was a reminder of what he can do.

Just lacking in that final area again for Brentford as Mbeumo’s ball across to Wissa is intercepted by Konate. Another telling contribution from the Frenchman.

Liverpool come on the attack, but Salah can only curl an effort wide from right on the edge of the box.

That effort was Liverpool’s 34th shot of the game. They almost get another one as Salah’s ball rolls straight to Flekken.

The hosts go up the other end, led by Schade, and his cross is turned behind by van Dijk.

A decent chance for the hosts as the ball is moved forward to Wissa. He’s one-on-one with van Dijk, and the Dutchman does well to close down the angle, but Wissa does manage to get the shot away at the near post. Unfortunately for him, Alisson has it covered.

At the other end, a long-range drive from Alexandr-Arnold fizzes narrowly wide.

Another poor set-piece from the visitors but they keep possession. Brentford look like the counter-attacking style is beginning to take a toll on the legs.

Liverpool make two more changes, as Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott come on for Szoboszlai and Mac Allister.

Brentford bring on Mathias Jensen for Damsgaard.
