Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool: Elliott and Salah send Reds top after Ayew’s sending off

Hodgson an outstanding person - Klopp

Liverpool went to the top of the Premier League table with victory over ten-man Crystal Palace as Harvey Elliott fired home a brilliant late winner.

Elliott’s 90th minute strike ensured a below-par Liverpool took all three points away from Selhurst Park after Mohamed Salah had cancelled out Jean-Philippe Mateta’s penalty.

Home manager Roy Hodgson had been booed by Crystal Palace supporters after a flat midweek defeat to Bournemouth, but his team responded well with a vastly-improved performance.

The London club were in control of the game after Mateta converted from 12 yards following a foul by young Liverpool defender Jarrel Quansah, before the game swung. A seemingly innocuous trip on Elliott by Jordan Ayew saw the forward shown a second yellow card by referee Andy Madley.

And almost immediately after Ayew was dismissed, Salah’s deflected effort — his 200th Liverpool goal — put Liverpool level, allowing substitute Elliott to produce a moment of quality and take Liverpool a point above Arsenal, who play Aston Villa later on Saturday.

Half-time changes...

A couple of changes at the interval, one to each team. Crystal Palace’s change is, we assume, injury enforced, with Jean-Philippe Mateta replacing Odsonne Edouard, who took a knock in the first half.

Liverpool’s is all together more intriguing: Joe Gomez is on for Wataru Endo, with Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield as the second half begins.

HT: Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool

A touch lethargic from Liverpool, but a very impressive first half from Crystal Palace, with the two big moments falling their way. Jefferson Lerma should, really, have put them in front, but a fit-again Alisson made a remarkable save with a bit of help from his woodwork. Then, just moments later, it looked as if Virgil van Dijk had conceded a penalty with Odsonne Edouard felled while through on goal - but a long VAR check resulted in an earlier foul from Will Hughes wiping Van Dijk’s infringement from the record.

Liverpool can’t make much of the corner, with Joachim Andersen heading clear. Can the visitors mount a telling assault before half time?

Two vital blocks! Better from Liverpool, Trenet Alexander-Arnold picking out Mohamed Salah. Salah can’t bit a couple of bodies and Dominik Szoboszlai’s follow-up bounces away off of Will Hughes’s blond bonce.

Liverpool’s passing in the final third hasn’t been accurate enough so far. Tsimikas finds Luis Diaz, who passes nicely to Ryan Gravenberch, and the Dutchman finds Darwin Nunez with his back to goal. Nunez could return it to either of his predecessors on the move, but his eventual pass is between the pair of them, ending the attack.

Five additional minutes to be played.

A Liverpool corner drifts out of play before curling back towards it target, Kostas Tsimikas not quite getting his delivery right.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Liverpool, 41 minutes

You’d imagine that long VAR delay and a couple of other stoppages will lead to a fair bit of first half stoppage time, which right now suits Crystal Palace given how they’ve built through this first 40 minutes. No attempts on target yet from the visitors.

Another bright Crystal Palace counter-attack sees Nathaniel Clyne play a ball into the box, but there is no-one in a home shirt to collect it.

Liverpool spring at speed, and Joel Ward is forced to take the first yellow card of the match with Luis Diaz set to sprint away from him.
