England vs Norway LIVE: Euro 2022 result and reaction as Beth Mead nets hat-trick in record goal haul
The Lionesses’ group stage campaign continues as they host Norway in Brighton
England face their toughest test of the group stages tonight as they continue their Euro 2022 campaign against Norway at the Amex Stadium in Brighton. This crucial fixture could decide who finishes top of Group A after both teams won their opening fixtures.
The Lionesses won the first match of the tournament 1-0 against Austria last Wednesday, with Beth Mead scoring the only goal of the game in front of a record crowd of 68,871 at Old Trafford. It wasn’t the most convincing performance from Sarina Wiegman’s team who will know they need to improve if they hope to defeat Norway and move back to the top of their group.
Norway demolished Northern Ireland 4-1 in their opening fixture in Southampton and took the lead in the goal difference standings. They are a team full of talent including Lyon’s Ada Hegerberg, Barcelona’s Caroline Graham Hansen and Chelsea’s Guro Reiten but their coach Martin Sjogren has stepped up the mind games by calling his team “underdogs” for the match.
Follow all the action from the Amex Stadium as the Lionesses host Norway:
GOAL! England 8-0 Norway (Mead, 81’)⚽️
81 mins: Hat-trick for Beth Mead! Keira Walsh and Alex Greenwood combine to get the ball into the box before Greenwood pulls it back to Walsh who smokes one from the front edge of the box.
The shot takes a deflection, hits the goalkeeper then loops up into the six-yard box. Mead is the first to react and meets it on the volley to tap it over Pettersen and complete her first major tournament hat-trick.
England 7-0 Norway
78 mins: Ada Hegerberg is off and looks utterly fed up. She’s hardly been involved all night. Celin Ildhusoey replaces her.
Caroline Graham Hansena also goes to the bench with Amalie Eikeland replacing her.
England 7-0 Norway
75 mins: Lauren Hemp has been subbed off by Sarina Wiegman with Chloe Kelly introduced for the final 15-20 minutes of this match.
Kelly is another player who will fancy herself to get a goal. She dribbles in from the left and weaves around two or three defenders to try and set up space for a shot but eventually loses the ball.
It comes out to Alex Greenwood who blasts an effort at goal but can’t find the target.
England 7-0 Norway
72 mins: It’s been a spanking. England have had 18 attempts with 11 on target. In comparison Norway have had three shots but none have been on target.
England are going through to the knockout stages and Norway are going to be left with a tricky match against Austria to see who else will make it out of Group A.
England 7-0 Norway
69 mins: Chance! Another cross from Lucy Bronze picks out Ella Toone in the area this time but she’s a little further out from goal and her headed effort lands in the arms of Guro Pettersen.
GOAL! England 7-0 Norway (Russo, 66’)⚽️
66 mins: Lucy Bronze bursts free down the right wing and curls a cross into the middle of the box. Alessia Russo rises above two defenders, meets the ball with a solid header and knocks it into the bottom corner!
England have seven.
England 6-0 Norway
65 mins: Ella Toone has easily picked up where Fran Kirby left off. She’s receiving the ball in the middle of the pitch, carrying up towards the box and finding passes to set up chance for her teammates.
This time she feed the ball over to Georgia Stanway who drills a first time effort just wide of the left-hand post.
England 6-0 Norway
63 mins: Close! Ella Toone lifts a pass into the penalty area and the ball just drops over the head of Alessia Russo.
Beth Mead arrives behind the striker and attempts to poke the ball towards goal but just misses it after the bounce.
England 6-0 Norway
60 mins: Sarina Wiegman brings on the substitutes.
Alex Greenwood replaces Rachel Daly, Alessia Russo is on for Ellen White and Ella Toone gets a run out with Fran Kirby brought off.
Those changes don’t exactly make England weaker, such is the impressive nature of their squad depth.
England 6-0 Norway
57 mins: Julie Blakstad has had enough of Beth Mead. Mead flicks the ball in behind the left-back who then drags her to ground to stop Mead’s run.
Blakstad goes in the book and the free kick is swung quickly into the box. Ellen White breaks free and fizzes a header wide of the back post!
