Coronavirus: How has sport been affected?

Bayern Munich‘s players and directors will take a 20 per cent pay cut until football resumes in order to save the jobs of staff holding administrative positions at the club.

The German champions were understood to be considering laying off members of staff due to the coronavirus pandemic, with the club’s annual wage bill currently surpassing £300m.

However, the players’ gesture, which will save the club millions of pounds, means those in danger will now be kept on.

The agreement was made after a meeting between senior figures in the club’s hierarchy and captain Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski among others.

Lewandowski, Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka have also donated a combined €2m to help support medics and clinics in the fight against the pandemic.

Borussia Monchengladbach announced last week that their players and directors have also taken a pay cut after German Football League chief executive warned that “tens of thousands of jobs” are at stake.

Rivals Borussia Dortmund are reported to be in negotiations over a similar measure.
