Manchester United’s Twitter admin made an embarrassing mistake in the wake of the club’s Champions League defeat by Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday night.

United fell behind 2-0 in the first half in Turkey, with some particularly shocking defending to blame for Demba Ba’s opener for the hosts.

Anthony Martial was able to pull one back for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side just before half-time in a quick response to Edin Visca’s goal, but the Red Devils were unable to find an equaliser in the second half, falling to their first defeat in Group H following a late win over Paris Saint-Germain and thrashing of RB Leipzig.

And after the match, a tweet from United’s Twitter account read: “Ole explains his half-time substitution and why @VLindelof [Victor Lindelof] remained on the bench for tonight’s game #MUFC #UEL”.

The “UEL” hashtag refers to the Europa League rather than the Champions League (UCL).

United have spent four seasons in the Europa League, most recently last season when they were eliminated by eventual winners Sevilla in the semi-finals.

The tweet was soon deleted and reposted with the correct hashtag – as shown below – but rival fans were quick to mock the club for the error.

“That club is lost. Already started on UEL preparations,” wrote one user, while another added: “The way they have being playing even the admin knows it ain’t UCL standards.”

One rival fan wrote “they are probably in the wrong league… they know where they belong,” while another said: “They already aim for UEL knockout stage this season. @ManUtd know their place.”

Teams who finish third in their Champions League groups enter the Europa League at the round-of-32 stage.

United, however, remain top of Group H with six points from three games. RB Leipzig are in second place in the group – trailing the Premier League side on goal difference – while last year’s Champions League runners-up PSG are third on three points.

Istanbul are fourth on three points with an inferior goal difference to PSG.
