The Champions League last-16 second leg sees Real Madrid host Atalanta, with a one-goal lead to protect from their triumphant first encounter.

That match at the end of February saw the Italian side have to mount something of a rearguard action, after they went down to 10 men just 17 minutes into the game. It took until the final stages of the first leg, however, for Real Madrid to find a route to goal, with Ferland Mendy the unlikely hero in the 1-0 win.

Since then, Real have drawn twice and won once in LaLiga, still trailing local rivals and league leaders Atletico by six points with 11 games of the season left.

Atalanta have had a similarly mixed time, winning three of their Serie A games and losing just once, to leaders Inter Milan. They are up into fourth in the table, but know they’ll have to be at their free-flowing best to attack with conviction in Madrid, score the away goal which is the bare minimum requirement and attempt to beat Real in the 90 minutes.

Zinedine Zidane’s side will certainly start the second leg as favourites, but Atalanta have scored 10 goals in their four matches since, so the prospect of a comeback cannot be ignored.

What is the team news?

Real Madrid have once more seen Eden Hazard suffer yet another injury, with the Belgian having managed just 15 minutes on the pitch in his latest comeback. Striker Mariano and right-back Dani Carvajal are both out too, while midfielder Casemiro is suspended after his booking in the first leg.

Sergio Ramos has returned from injury recently and Federico Valverde is likely to stay in the side in place of Casemiro.

Atalanta are without wing-back Hans Hateboer and defender Berat Djimsiti. Remo Freuler was sent-off in the first leg, so is suspended here.
