Demarai Gray smashed home a long-range strike in the second minute of stoppage time to earn Everton a 2-1 victory over Arsenal and end the team’s eight-match winless run in the English Premier League on Monday. The winger cut in from the left and took aim with a fierce shot that flew in off the inside of the post, completing Everton‘s comeback after Richarlison’s equalizer in the 79th. It sparked scenes of jubilation at Goodison Park on a night there was a small protest by home fans inside the stadium at the board’s running of the club. It looked like Martin Odegaard’s volley in the second minute of first-half injury time was going to win the game for Arsenal, which was looking to climb back into fifth place with a victory. The visitors rode their luck, with Richarlison having two goals — a header in the 43rd and a low finish in the 57th — ruled out by video review because of marginal offside decisions. The Brazil forward kept plugging away and got his reward when he headed home a rebound after another powerful shot from Gray was tipped onto the crossbar by goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. It was Everton‘s first win since Sept. 25 and moved the team eight points clear of the relegation zone. In the 27th minute of the game, a section of Everton fans left their seats to signal their unhappiness at the board amid the club’s 27th season without a trophy Some of the fans were seen making their way toward the exits inside Goodison as play continued.

Demarai Gray gave his reaction to Sky Sports and described his winning goal as a ‘crazy moment’ and his best since joining the club. He said:
It was a crazy moment. My best moment here so far. It was important for us to get that win. As a group we have gone through this bad patch but we have stuck together. With the fans like that, behind us for the whole game, it’s more than deserved.
“My confidence is high at the moment. I believe in myself and my ability. I’m working hard and improving and I want to be the best player I can be. We’ve had a rough patch and today I’m just happy we got the three points.”
Reaction from Martin Odegaard
Arsenal midfielder Martin Odegaard spoke to Sky Sports post-match and says that this result is a ‘hard one to take’ for the Gunners. He said:
It’s a hard one to take. I think in general we were not at the level we needed to be at today.
“We had some good moments but we have to do much better. We should have been better.
“It’s hard to say. That’s just how it is sometimes. It’s hard to say exactly what happened. We have to do better when we have that lead. We stopped playing and gave them the game they wanted to play.
“I think it is [a mindset problem]. When you’re leading 1-0 you get afraid to lose the win and in my opinion that’s what we did wrong today. You go for the second goal and that was the intention but we didn’t manage to do that on the pitch.”

Everton’s captain Seamus Coleman spoke to Sky Sports following his team’s remarkable comeback victory over Arsenal at Goodison Park and praised the fans for their support as well as the quality of matchwinner Demarai Gray. He said:
We knew whatever goes on behind the scenes, whatever goes on, the fans always come here to support us. They need to see a reaction. They got behind us from minute one to minute 90 and got us over the line. Our performance showed that. I have been here 12 years. You take the good with the bad. But One thing they do for 90 minutes is support you.
“I tell him [Demarai Gray] every day. I am on him every day. Sometimes these players don’t realise how good they can be. He has bundles of ability. He needs to work hard every day as that is what the top players do. He has done that this week.
“You hurt when you lose and when you make mistakes. I take responsibility for the Liverpool game. But I have been around long enough. You take the highs and the lows. You come in next day and work hard. We go again next game. We build from there but this gives us great confidence.”
