The draw for the quarter-final of the FA Cup takes place tonight following the conclusion of Manchester United’s fifth-round tie against Fulham.

Ruben Amorim’s side hope to earn a place in the last eight and continue their defence of the trophy they surprisingly won last season under Erik ten Hag.

Already through to the next round of the competition are Premier League clubs Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth while Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City look to win some silverware following a 3-1 victory over Championship club Plymouth Argyle on Saturday. Also in the quarter-finals are Preston North End who defeated Burnley yesterday meaning their will be a representative from the second division in the last eight.

Following today’s two matches, there is one more tie to take place tomorrow, when Nottingham Forest welcome Ipswich Town to the City Ground.

The quarter-final ties will take place across the weekend of 26 March, before Wembley will host the semi-finals on 26 and 27 April and the competition concludes with the final on 17 May.

Danny Welbeck reacts to Brighton win

“It’s great to get the winning goal,” the match-winner told ITV.

“It was a solid team performance – there was a lot going on in that game today. Lots of ups and downs, but we stuck with it. I'm so proud of the lads.

“Newcastle can always put you under pressure. They are very dangerous, but we stuck to our guns and we put in a great shift.”

Howe on Gordon red card

"It looked harsh, but we will have to analyse it properly,” Eddie Howe, the Newcastle manager, said to ITV.

“We have not seen a replay of it. I am going on my original view, I thought it looked harsh.

“Anthony didn't mean any harm. I have only seen him very briefly and he was very disappointed."

Danny Welbeck settles FA Cup classic with Newcastle

The hosts were without full-back Lewis Hall because of an ankle injury which will require a visit to a specialist, but Alexander Isak’s 22nd-minute penalty gave them a lead which was cancelled out before half time by former Magpie Yankuba Minteh, and an at times scruffy game remained in the balance until Welbeck’s intervention.

Isak had seen a third-minute header from a tight angle blocked by Adam Webster as both sides started with real intent.

Millwall goalkeeper ‘endangered Mateta’s life’, fumes Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish labelled a tackle by Millwall’s goalkeeper which left striker Jean-Philippe Mateta in hospital “the most reckless challenge I think I’ve ever seen”.

Goalkeeper Liam Roberts was shown a red card, following a VAR review, after coming off his line to clear a long ball and colliding into the on-rushing Mateta in the head with his raised studs.

Frenchman Mateta, who has been in superb form for Premier League side Palace with 15 goals from 33 appearances, was given oxygen on the pitch during a lengthy stoppage before being taken off and put into an ambulance. He was replaced by Eddie Nketiah.

Guardiola on O'Reilly's impact

Pep Guardiola praised Nico O’Reilly’s “big presence” after the teenager’s double turned Manchester City’s FA Cup tie against Championship strugglers Plymouth around.

Guardiola said: “Sometimes you take a good decision, otherwise, he would not to score two goals. He’s not a typical player from the academy because, all the academy players, they are so small.

“But he has a big, big presence. Normally, he’s an attacking midfielder, he’s the number 10, arrives to the box really well, has a sense of goal.

“For the (injury) problems that we have, he has adapted really well as a full-back.

“He’s another threat from our set-pieces because we are not a tall team and he helps us.

“He plays really good with the ball and without the ball and he helped us with two fantastic goals.”

Teenage talent Nico O’Reilly saves Man City from FA Cup humbling by Plymouth

For eight minutes, it threatened to be perhaps the most ignominious day of a managerial career that has produced three Champions Leagues, 12 domestic league titles and a couple of FA Cups. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City were losing at home to Plymouth Argyle: the conquerors of Liverpool, admittedly, but the side with the worst defensive record in the country, a team with no away wins in the Championship but, improbable as it appeared, a lead at the Etihad Stadium.

If an improbable script reflected the FA Cup’s enduring ability to surprise, it was also a reflection of the modern Manchester City; more frail and fragile. Even victory brought a hint of the unlikely. City’s rescuer was not Erling Haaland, sent on after an hour, but Nico O’Reilly, a teenage Mancunian who started the night with one senior goal and trebled his tally. “Two goals, I wasn’t expecting it,” he said. Playing out of position, he cast Plymouth’s giantkillers out of the FA Cup.

Emery 'motivated' to reach Wembley

“We are now in the quarter-final and it is one step forward in the competition, we didn’t do that in the last two years,” Unai Emery said.

“There are some teams who are more favourite than us, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle.

“We know this competition is a way for a trophy, a way for Wembley, a way for Europa League and prestige for the club and the supporters are excited and motivated to try and share this opportunity with us.”

Emery praises Rashford and Asensio

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery hopes Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford can fire his side to FA Cup glory.

Emery said: “Each one is playing in his position, trying to feel comfortable.

“And the players are understanding as well where are the spaces are to use them and trying to overcome the difficulties with the opponent they were facing us.

“Of course, I am very happy how they played and how they are adapting to us.

“We will need them for the next matches and the challenges we have.”

Marco Asensio brace guides Aston Villa into FA Cup quarter-finals

Marco Asensio’s second-half double sent Aston Villa through to their first FA Cup quarter-final in 10 years after a 2-0 win over Championship strugglers Cardiff.

After being frustrated for 68 minutes, the on-loan Paris St. Germain midfielder broke the deadlock from a Marcus Rashford assist before killing the game 10 minutes from time.

Boss Unai Emery said his side are not contenders for the competition before the game, but with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea already out, they are one of the strongest teams left.

Vitor Pereira remains upbeat despite losing Matheus Cunha

Vitor Pereira rued a costly day for Wolves’ survival hopes after their talisman Matheus Cunha was sent off in a moment of madness during their 5-4 penalty shootout defeat at Bournemouth in the FA Cup fifth round.

Cunha had sent the tie to extra time with a sensational 60th-minute equaliser from range but lost his head with spot-kicks on the horizon.

After Cunha had been flagged offside in the 119th minute, he grabbed Cherries left-back Milos Kerkez around the neck before he appeared to punch, kick and push his head into the face of the same player.

“Matheus is a special player,” Pereira reflected, “In this game the emotional side was very high and not only inside the pitch, but on the bench and in the stands, everywhere and a lot of pressure.

“In the end it happens what can happen. It should not happen but this is something that happens in football.

“Don’t ask me about it because I was looking at the other side. In the end the referee decided the red card.

“Of course the red card is one less player, one less specialist in penalties and the next games without a player that is important for us, but in the end we will start the next game against Everton with 11 and this is the most important for me.

“He is important but I cannot speak about what I don’t know. It is important to check the situation, to look for what happened because I was looking for the other side.

“I cannot judge a situation because the others say to me he kicked, he punched, he did what he did, with the head and the player went to hospital? No, OK but it is a situation that cannot happen of course. To judge the situation, I must have the clear image in my mind.”
