Norwich City 'need' to be in the Premier League, says Canaries boss Neil Adams

Boss insists Canaries can't afford to be in the second tier for too long

Norwich City manager Neil Adams says the East Anglia club need to make an immediate return to the Premier League.

The Canaries were relegated last year after sacking manager Chris Hughton in April.

Adams' men haven't won an opening day fixture since a 4-0 victory over Grimsby in 2002 and travel to newly-promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

"I put no weight or importance on that at all. It's a great stat, an answer to a quiz question, but it means absolutely nothing," Adams told BBC Radio Norfolk.

"It's irrelevant. Unless it's the same 11 against the same 11, it is nothing more than a stat."

The former Carrow Road player, who managed the club for five games last season, has brought in Kyle Lafferty and Lewis Grabban, as well as Gary O'Neil while Robert Snodgrass and Ricky van Wolfswinkel have left for Hull City and St Etienne respectively.

"We're a Premier League club. It's a Premier League support and setup," he added.

"Norwich City need to be in the Premier League. But you get what you deserve and we're in the Championship.

"Hopefully in 12 months' time we can say we deserve to be in the Premier League."
