UEFA Nations League explained

The FA have confirmed that Wolves defender Conor Coady and Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford will leave the England international camp and miss the UEFA Nations League games against Belgium and Iceland.

Neither were involved in Thursday night’s 3-0 friendly win over Republic of Ireland, with Gareth Southgate rotating his side somewhat and handing second-half debuts to Dean Henderson and Jude Bellingham.

Following the match, the England camp revealed that Coady, who scored for the Three Lions against Wales last month, has needed to head into quarantine, while Rashford is still recovering from injury.

A statement read:

"Conor Coady and Marcus Rashford will miss England’s remaining November internationals.

"Coady has been forced to self-isolate having discovered he had inadvertently come into contact with somebody prior to camp who has tested positive for COVID-19 via an NHS Test and Trace alert.

"The Wolverhampton Wanderers defender had returned two negative tests as part of The FA and UEFA’s protocol but, in line with UK Government guidelines, has to adhere to a period of self-isolation.

“Meanwhile, Rashford’s arrival into camp had initially been delayed to allow for further assessment on an injury sustained last weekend but the Manchester United forward will now not meet up.”

Southgate has already lost Joe Gomez from his original squad with a long-term injury, with the Liverpool centre-back undergoing knee surgery on Thursday.

England face Belgium on Sunday and Iceland three days later as they wrap up their Nations League campaign. Southgate’s side currently sit in third place in the group.
