Danny Drinkwater and Andros Townsend have been omitted from Roy Hodgson’s final 23-man England squad for Euro 2016.

Marcus Rashford, the 18-year-old Manchester United striker, and Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge have retained their places despite doubts over their experience and fitness respectively.

Rashford, who is still studying towards his A-Levels at Ashton-on-Mersey School in Sale, became England’s youngest debutant goal-scorer during the 2-1 victory against Australia on Friday, breaking Tommy Lawton’s 78-year record at the Stadium of Light.

Who makes up Roy Hodgson's final 23 squad?

England manager Hodgson decided to stick with Sturridge, meanwhile, after the former Chelsea and Manchester City striker proved his fitness during a series of training exercises over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Drinkwater’s exclusion is likely to cause debate after the 26-year-old helped propel Leicester City to the most unlikely title success of the Premier League era last season.

The Manchester United graduate also won the man of the match award on his debut, a 2-1 friendly defeat against the Netherlands in March, but will now have to return focus to Leicester’s title defence in the 2016/17 campaign.

Townsend, 24, on the other hand, appears to have suffered for being unable to prevent Newcastle United suffering relegation.

Hodgson’s final 23 includes three goalkeepers, seven defenders, eight midfielders and five forwards. Click here for a full list.
