Liverpool face an anxious wait over the fitness of Andy Robertson after the Scotland left-back was left out of his side’s Nations League game on Sunday.

The former Hull City man captained his nation to a penalty shoot-out victory in midweek in their play-off final against Serbia, which ensured Scotland will be at Euro 2020.

That will be their first major tournament finals appearance in 23 years by the time it rolls around, but speaking immediately after the shoot-out Robertson noted that his hamstring had started to “seize up”.

Boss Steve Clarke had said Robertson was “the most doubtful out of the ones who have a [knock]” in the lead-up to Sunday’s game.

And it would appear that concern was well-founded, as Robertson was left out of the Scots’ line-up and squad list entirely for the game in Slovakia on Sunday.

Liverpool are already set to be without fellow full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold for their next match, which sees the champions host the current league leaders Leicester City.

In addition, first-choice centre-back pair Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are potentially out for the entire season after picking up long-term knee injuries, with the latter suffering his misfortune last week on international duty with England.

Missing Robertson as well would thus leave Jurgen Klopp without his entire usual defensive line.

Joel Matip and Fabinho are expected to play in the centre if available, but Matip has only just returned to fitness and the Brazilian is facing a race to recover from his own injury.

Robertson’s replacement will be new signing Kostas Tsimikas, but even he has been injured and absent with coronavirus this season and has played just twice for the Reds so far.
