World Cup 2014: As England and Uruguay prepare for Group D encounter, Google releases Doodle

The search engine giant has created a doodle for day 8 of the tournament

Google has celebrated the eighth day of the Fifa 2014 World Cup with an animated Doodle as defending champions Spain crashed out of the tournament at the group stage.

Thursday’s Doodle followed the search engine giant’s colourful tribute to Brazil’s favelas on Wednesday, highlighting one of the starkest signs of economic inequality within the country.

This Doodle heads back to basics and simply shows the ‘g’ kicking and heading the football while the other letters remain stationary.

After their 2-0 defeat against Chile, Spain became the first holders to lose their opening two games. Even if Spain manage to beat Australia on Monday, it is impossible for the team to re-claim the world title when the results of Wednesday's game and their thrashing by Holland last week are combined.

Australia also suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Netherlands despite an "astonishing" volley from Tim Cahill in what many have argued is the best goal of the 2014 World Cup so far.

Twitter users reacted to Spain’s performance by hijacking the top-trending #SpainvsChile to fill the internet with cruel memes. Star striker Diego Costa was the first to suffer jibes for having changed his nationality from Brazilian to Spanish in order to play for the national team.

England will go head-to-head with Uruguay tonight in their second game since the Fifa World Cup began. The pressure will be on for a more successful performance on the pitch, after the team lost 2-1 against Italy on Saturday.
