England and USA fans prepare for semi-final

England women are out of the Women's World Cup after an agonising semi-final defeat to the USA

Steph Houghton had an 84th-minute penalty saved as the Lionesses missed out on a place in the final, losing 2-1 to the United States in Lyon. Phil Neville's side headed into the last four with dreams of becoming the first senior England team - male or female - to contest a World Cup final since 1966. However, a third penalty miss of the tournament ultimately proved costly after a rollercoaster match.

Here's how it played out:

Neville's been planning for the USA

Phil Neville says he has been planning for the crucial meeting with the United States since he became the England head coach.

"We've planned for it, we've played against them and we know how we're going to play," he said.

"When it was France or USA in the semi-final every one of my players said: 'Let's hope it's USA.'

"When I got the job, the first three games I looked at were the USA. I was sitting in my house in Valencia and watched three games in one afternoon because I thought: 'How can we win the World Cup?'

"You have to beat the best, and the USA are the best. They've proven it.

"But we're ready for them. Sometimes, before these games, you can have fear and trepidation - but I can smell nothing but freedom, happiness and excitement."

Rapinoe: USA ready to face confident England

When she's not annoying Donald Trump by saying she will not go to the White House if the win the World Cup, Megan Rapinoe is scoring on the pitch.

Her two goals saw USA safely past France in the quarter-final, but she says England present a very different challenge.

The Lionesses want to develop a 'serial winners mentality' says Phil Neville.

The England head coach believes a defeat in the World Cup semi-final would be seen as a failure for the Lionesses campaign in France.

Race for the Golden Boot.

Three players in tonight's match are all in contention for the Golden Boot trophy. England's Ellen White has been instrumental in the progress of the Lionesses scoring five goals along the way.

Also on five are USA duo Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan. Rapinoe has scored two goals in each of the USA's knockout games whilst Morgan put five past Thailand in the group stages.

Sam Kerr also tops the table with five goals but her Australian side was knocked out in the round of 16.

"It's a shootout maybe between Ellen and Alex Morgan for the top scorer," Phil Neville said. "There are going to be brilliant players on this football pitch."

Team news

A big change for England as goalkeeper Carly Telford comes in for her second game of the tournament. She replaces Karen Bardsley who has an injury.

Rachel Daly impressed when she came on against Norway and she replaces Fran Kirby with Beth Mead coming in for Toni Duggan.

An even bigger change for USA as Jill Ellis drops Megan Rapinoe. Rapinoe scored both goals in the USA's 2-1 over France in the quarter-final.

Christen Press gets a starting place instead.

Team news

It's an interesting selection from Phil Neville as it looks as though England are going to set up in a new 4-4-2 formation.

Nikita Parris will partner Ellen White up front, Beth Mead slots in on the left with Rachel Daly combining with Lucy Bronze on the right.

Will it work? Only time will tell...

Previous meetings

The last three meetings between the side have all been in the SheBelieves Cup.

In March this year the sides drew 2-2. The USA came away with a 1-0 victory in 2018 with England also winning the 2017 clash 1-0.

What will the result be tonight?

The previous meetings might not be able to tell us much but the USA have reached the World Cup final four times in seven attempts whilst England have never progressed further than the semis.

The two teams have also only met once in the World Cup, back in 2007 when the USA won 3-0.

Here's hoping we don't get a repeat performance tonight.
