SILVA BACKED TO ADAPT QUICKLY FOR WOLVES

Nuno Espirito Santo has backed Wolves' record buy Fabio Silva to adapt quickly to the Premier League.

The 18-year-old completed a £35million switch to Molineux from Porto last week.

He is expected to be in the squad for Monday's Premier League opener at Sheffield United and Nuno believes the young forward can handle the top-flight pressure.

He said: "It's about the talent. What we look at is the talent and quality of the player and the ability and capacity the player has to come and adapt as fast as possible to our ideas, squad and environment.

"We are really happy with Fabi. How we are going to do things with him, when and where we have to decide. He is working very well and he is adapting fast.

"I didn't expect anything else because the core of the squad is here and our rules, ideas and the way we socialise is evident.

"After that it all depends on the player and the time he needs. One thing is certain - the quality and talent, Fabi has a lot."

KOEMAN PLEASED WITH MESSI STAY

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has hailed the news that Lionel Messi is staying with the team for the coming season after the Argentine kept the club on tenterhooks by trying to force a move away for free last month.

Barca's all-time top scorer confirmed last week that he would remain at the club where he has spent his entire career for the coming season and began training with new coach Koeman for the first time on Monday.

"It's great, everyone knows he's the best player in the world, so to have that player in your team is exceptional," Koeman told the club's official media channel on Friday, speaking for the first time since the Messi saga began.

"For us it's now very important to have Leo in the best conditions to play, there's no question about his quality and it's fantastic that he'll be part of the season with Barcelona, everyone is really happy about that."

BRUCE PLEASED WITH NEWCASTLE BUSINESS

Steve Bruce is pleased with the transfer business Newcastle have managed to get over the line this summer.

Ashley had sanctioned deals for £20milion striker Callum Wilson, £13.5million full-back Jamal Lewis and free agents Jeff Hendrick and Ryan Fraser.

Bruce said: "I don't have everyday dealings with him, he's got so much going on in his life. The most important thing is the relationship a manager has with his CEO.

"You're not going to see eye to eye all the time, but when three or four people walk through the door of the calibre we've had, it obviously helps.

"If I look where we are now from where we were 12 months ago, the squad is stronger and better."

TOTTENHAM CHASING STRIKER

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is confident he will sign a striker in the transfer window.

Mourinho is desperate to strengthen his armoury in attack and provide back up for Harry Kane.

The Portuguese said: "I want, I need a striker, but I want to make it very, very clear that the club knows that I need a striker and they also want a striker.

"Are we going to get one? I believe so, I honestly believe so. The team needs it for the balance of the squad."

ARTETA DELIVERS TRANSFER UPDATE

Mikel Arteta insists Arsenal's transfer business is far from complete as he told fans they can "relax" over the future of captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gunners have signed playmaker Willian on a free transfer from Chelsea, while also spending a £22million initial fee on Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes.

Despite their known financial struggles, summed up by the fact the club made 55 redundancies last month, Arsenal continue to be linked with moves for the likes of midfielders Daniel Partey and Houssem Aouar.

Arteta, who was promoted from head coach to first-team manager on Thursday, did little to quell speculation about future signings as he confirmed they are hopeful of more arrivals before the window closes on October 5.

"We are still active in the market, we are looking at different options," he said on the eve of Arsenal's Premier League opener away to newly-promoted Fulham.

"We are active in the market with players in and out, at the moment the squad balance is not ideal.

"There is still some work to do, but we have to bear in mind the complications of this market.

"The complexity and as well the timing because you can see that clubs are behaving in many different ways and it is a bit uncertain how this is going to evolve in the next few weeks.

"Numbers-wise, some positions are overbooked. Some others, in terms of the specific qualities we need, are still not there."

KLOPP GIVES WIJNALDUM UPDATE

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists the ongoing contract situation with midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is "absolutely fine".

The Holland international is in the final nine months of his current deal and has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona to be reunited for former national team coach Ronald Koeman.

Klopp has played down the speculation but failed to provide a definitive answer on the 29-year-old's future.

"It's all good with Gini. Absolutely fine about the future as far as we are involved. I can't speak about a few years, but it's all good for the moment," he said.

"You know the situation - between me, Gini and the club, everything is fine.

"Since Gini is here I have had 500 or 600 talks with him. Of course I've spoken to him since he came back from international duty. But that's all."

GIROUD WANTS CHELSEA STAY

Olivier Giroud is understood to want to stay at Chelsea and fight for first-team football despite interest from Juventus.

Giroud fired his 40th goal for France in Les Bleus' 4-2 victory over Croatia on Tuesday in warming up for the start of the new Premier League campaign.

Chelsea have launched a major squad overhaul this summer, shelling out more than £200million on a string of high-profile recruits, not least Germany striker Timo Werner.

But Giroud remains determined to continue his Stamford Bridge career, the PA news agency understands.
