Liverpool battled into the quarter-finals of the Champions League after beating Inter Milan 2-1 on aggregate despite a 1-0 defeat in the second leg at Anfield.

The Reds led 2-0 heading into the second leg after Roberto Firmino’s 75th-minute header and Mo Salah’s goal inside the final 10 minutes at the San Siro but found things trickier than expected back on home soil.

Jurgen Klopp’s men lacked a cutting edge all evening as Joel Matip’s first-half header hit the bar and Salah also struck the post before the break when it seemed easier to score.

The Egyptian hit the woodwork for a second time with 15 minutes remaining but by that point, Inter were back in the contest after Lautaro Martinez hammered home an absolute screamer from the edge of the area on 61 minutes that flew into the top corner beyond the outstretched arms of Alisson.

However, two minutes after Martinez had brought the Italian side right back into the tie, Alexis Sanchez’s moment of madness cost them dearly as he was sent off for a second yellow card after a reckless tackle on Fabinho.

Inter gamely battled on with ten men and although Liverpool couldn’t find the goal that would have put the tie to bed, they held on to secure their place in the quarter-finals.

Inter are in the Champions League knockout rounds for the 11th time but the first time in 10 years having finished runners-up to Real Madrid in Group D, while Liverpool became the first English club to win all six group games as they ended Group B 11 points clear.

This is one of two ties in the 2021/22 Champions League round of 16, along with Benfica-Ajax, to bring together two former European Cup winners, although this is only these sides’ sixth competitive fixture.

Inter Milan coach, Simone Inzaghi believes it is crucial that his team make early inroads into Liverpool’s two-goal lead if they have any chance of making into the next round. Speaking before the game he said:

It will be a difficult game, but we are highly motivated. It is important and essential to score a goal in the first half.

“Inter haven’t reached this stage of the competition for many years and we knew that we would be facing a top team, having finished second in the group. We did our best in the first leg and we’ll do the same tomorrow.”

Liverpool vs Inter Milan: Liverpool’s defensive heart building a platform for quadruple ambitions

Trent Alexander-Arnold had posted a tweet with a simple yet assertive message. “No Entry,” it read, accompanied by an image of his goalline clearance to deny a dink from Pablo Fornals.

“Our aim, first and foremost, is to keep a clean sheet,” the right-back said in the aftermath of Liverpool’s taxing 1-0 victory over West Ham. “We’ve been able to do that well over the last few weeks especially, but we want to make sure we keep it going.”

Naturally, a team that possesses the explosive artillery of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino will be viewed through the prism of their offensive might.

Scoring three or more regularly does little to shake that framing, but it is at the other end of the pitch where the platform for a possible quadruple has been constructed.

Liverpool vs Inter Milan: The first leg

The Reds travelled to the San Siro three weeks ago and met a resolute Inter Milan who held their own for most of the game and even looked likely to nick a win before Liverpool struck.

They left it late, opening the scoring through Roberto Firmino’s 75th minute header before Mo Salah added a second inside the final 10 minutes to leave Inter chasing a two-goal deficit at Anfield this evening.

"They don’t come here as tourists," said Jurgen Klopp, "I know that they want to chase the game - that’s what we want to do because we are not a team who defends results."

Liverpool vs Inter Milan: Team changes

Jurgen Klopp makes four changes to the Liverpool team that lined-up against West Ham last time out. Joel Matip replaces Ibrahima Konate alongside Virgil van Dijk with Curtis Jones and Thiago Alcantara coming into midfield for Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita. Up top Diogo Jota starts and Luis Diaz drops out.

Three changes from Simone Inzaghi. Nicola Barrella, Edin Dzeko and Matteo Darmian drop out of the Inter Milan side with Ivan Perisic, Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal all replacing them.

Liverpool vs Inter Milan: Recent results

Liverpool are on a 12-game winning run including the Carabao Cup final where they beat Chelsea in a penalty shootout. The Reds have won every one of their seven Champions League matches this season and bring a two-goal lead into the tie after beating Inter Milan away from home. Last time out Sadio Mane scored the only goal in Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over West Ham in the Premier League.

Inter Milan come into the game on the back of thrashing Salernitana 5-0 in Serie A. Lautaro Martinez bagged a hat-trick and Edin Dzeko scored twice as they cruised to a dominant win. Unbeaten now in three games Milan may just have enough confidence to take the game to Liverpool this evening.

Liverpool vs Inter Milan: Injuries and absentees

Roberto Firmino, Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip have all returned to training for Liverpool after missing games through illness and injury. Thiago and Matip could feature tonight but Jurgen Klopp believes Firmino may need a few more days training before he is back up to match fitness.

Inter Milan will be without suspended midfielder Nicolo Barella but head coach Simone Inzaghi told the media that he has an otherwise full complement to choose from.

Liverpool vs Inter Milan

Welcome to The Independent’s coverage of Liverpool’s Champions League last 16 second leg against Inter Milan.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have a decent two-goal advantage following their victory at the San Siro where Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah both scored in the final 15 minutes of the game to earn Liverpool the win.

Simone Inzaghi’s men performed admirably throughout the match in Italy and more than looked like a match for the Reds. Denzel Dumfries was threatening on the counter attack with Ivan Perisic a constant thorn to the Liverpool back line.

But, tonight’s game at Anfield presents a different challenge for Inter.

Liverpool are unbeaten at home in 31 games across all competitions since losing 0-1 here to Fulham back in March last year. They won every one of their Champions League group stage games this term and are come into the match on the back of a 12-game winning run – including the Carabao Cup final (in a penalty shootout after the match ended 0-0).
