Follow live reaction from the Champions League after Manchester City cruised to an away victory at Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

City, who are again favourites to win the Champions League title, made a perfect start in Portugal as Riyad Mahrez steered the Premier League side ahead after eight minutes.

The goal was given after a lengthy VAR check, with the opener being initially disallowed due to an offside in the build-up, but it was finally awarded to give Mahrez a ninth goal in as  many games.

City doubled their lead on 17 minutes as Bernardo Silva guided a stunning half-volley off the underside of the crossbar from a corner to put the visitors in full control of the tie.

Phil Foden put City three up on 32 minutes as the visitors continued to dominate, with Bernardo adding City’s fourth shortly before half-time.

Bernardo had a header disallowed for offside after the break as he was denied a hat-trick, but Raheem Sterling added their fifth with a sublime shot into the top corner.

It’s always an interesting watch if you look at Guardiola on the sideline during a match. But tonight’s game gave an insight into his mentality at City.

He continued to fire orders at his players throughout and when players came off he was giving them a debrief.

He may be saying outwardly he isn’t paying attention to the Champions League pressure but his determination to execute the perfect game seems to suggest otherwise.

Man of the Match Bernardo Silva told BT Sport: “I think in the first half we weren’t that good to be winning 4-0. I thought we were a bit sloppy, lost some easy balls that allowed them to counterattack.

“Sometimes we play better than we did in the first half and we go in 0-0. We can improve, We can do better.

“I’m from the other side of the city as I played for Benfica. It was special to score here in my home town.

“It’s an important win and we still have a job to do in Manchester.”

A look at that sensational Sterling goal. I got my maths wrong earlier, apologies, it is the star’s 127th goal for City.

Still a cracking stat for the England forward.

What a gesture from the Sporting fans, they are on their feet and waving their scarves for their players.

It’s the first time they have reached the last 16 since 2009. Yes they may have been thumped but what a long way this club has come in the last few years.

A great learning moment for manager Rúben Amorim, who we should hear from soon.

But tonight was all City who look in prime position to take a lot of silverware this season.

Well, what a performance from Manchester City.

Sporting were completely dominated from start to finish. The first half was more clinical from City with Mahrez, Silva and Foden getting past Adan to go 4-0 up at half-time.

But City weren’t done there as the Sky Blues’ man of the moment Sterling smashed a beauty of a goal home.

There is of course another leg to this last 16 tie but it’s difficult to see Sporting coming back - especially at the Etihad.

Bayern Munich may have been my favourites ahead of this match but City have done enough to convince me the title is theirs to lose.

Three added minutes as Sporting’s fans stand to show their appreciation to their club

An utterly disappointing clash for the Portuguese side but it’s heartening to see the supporters cheering them on despite the scoreline.

The crowd are thunderously loud when Bernardo Silva is subbed off for Delap. No love lost for the ex-Benfica man at Sporting.

Ake was also brought on for Laporte.

Just after the subs, Adan made a sensational save to keep De Bruyne out but gave away a corner. Fortunately for Sporting, the chance ended in a goal kick.

City still in control of the ball here...

Yellow card - Sporting Lisbon 0-5 Man City (Ugarte, 83’)

Sporting close down another attempt with Mahrez again the heart of the attack. It ends with a corner with De Bruyne taking the kick.

Dias was close to scoring but Adan collected the ball. The keeper hasn’t had the best match but he also hasn’t been helped by his defenders.

Sporting kicked the ball out of play as De Bruyne was down injured. He was back on his feet and remained on the pitch.

Ugarte then challenged Sterling to end up with a yellow card. The frustrations from Sporting starting to show with the cards flowing.

Yellow card - Sporting Lisbon 0-5 Man City (Esgaio, 79’)

The free kick ended in a goal kick with Sporting allowing another opportunity to pass them by.

Sporting have made changes with Slimanu and Tabata on for Sarabia and Paulinho.

The subbed players now sat on the bench look like ghosts. A shocked vacancy as they reflect on this drubbing by the Premier League holders.

But Sporting aren’t completely down and out as they string together a promising attack. They want to give something to the fans present but are yet to hammer down City’s defences.

Esgaio then picked up a yellow for a sloppy challenge.
