The full-time whistle blows at St James’ Park as Newcastle strengthen their Champions League aspirations with a 2-1 win against Brentford in the Premier League. The Magpies headed into this game in a positive mood after their Carabao Cup success against Liverpool just before the international break. The hosts showed no signs of a cup final hangover in the first half as they dominated the Bees and deservedly led just before the half-time break thanks to Alexander Isak’s 20th Premier League goal of the season after some good work by Jacob Murphy down the right-hand side. The visitors responded well in the second half and drew level thanks to Bryan Mbeumo’s composed penalty after Nick Pope brought down Yoane Wissa in the box. However, the home side retook the lead after Sandro Tonali’s unstoppable strike from the tightest of angles flew past Mark Flekken at his near post. Thomas Frank’s side huffed and puffed for a late equaliser and were denied a late penalty after Bruno Guimaraes was involved in a late challenge with Mikkel Damsgaard. Eddie Howe’s side, however, held on for three valuable points to move into fifth place in the table, and only one point behind Manchester City in fourth. The visitors had a superior xG (1.59) compared to their opponents (1.43). Thanks for reading!
