Alexis Sanchez will miss Arsenal’s festive fixture programme after suffering a setback with the hamstring injury sustained against Norwich City last month.
The Chilean forward had been set to return to the substitutes’ bench for Monday’s Premier League victory against Manchester City at the Emirates.
But manager Arsene Wenger revealed after the 2-1 win , which moved Arsenal to within two points of leaders Leicester City, that the former Barcelona star had been forced to withdraw from his plans over the weekend.
“Sanchez will be back around Jan 10, but don’t count on him for the Christmas period,” Wenger said. “He has had a slight setback, very slight.
“He was keen to play tonight, but we didn’t want to risk him.
“The problem happened two days ago in training, so it was not worth the risk.”

On one occasion he seemed to simply fall over rather than bother competing with Giroud.

They’d do well to get a tenth of that after a display in which he gave the ball away in critical areas time and again, contributing decisively to Arsenal’s second.

Mesut Ozil, meanwhile, overcame a sickness bug to orchestrate Arsenal’s win against City.
The German created both goals for Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud and Wenger admitted that his contribution was key.
“At the end of the day, you need one guy who gives the ball to the others to score,” Wenger said. “In our team, Ozil is usually the spirit, he sees the guy making the run.
“Ozil is much more mature and much more keen to take responsibility this season. Hh has developed his physical attributes and his desire to win. He plays to win the game.
“This kind of talent is exceptional and he can help us win every game.
“He had a chest infection and was in bed, so only had one training session yesterday (Sunday).
“He could not prepare well physically and I was cautious, but we had lost three players, so he had to play.”
