Unai Emery optimistic for Arsenal future despite Europa League final defeat

Arsenal fell to a 2-1 defeat against Barcelona in the annual Joan Gamper Trophy friendly after an impressive display derailed by familiar defensive lapses.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave the Gunners the lead in the first half after turning Jordi Alba before thumping past Neto.

However, Unai Emery's side were pegged back by a calamitous own goal by Ainsley Maitland-Niles who, under little pressure, passed beyond Bern Leno into the far corner of the net before Luis Suarez stole in to score a disheartening stoppage-time winner. Relive all the action live below:

Barcelona 1 - 1 Arsenal

Suarez gets into Arsenal's area and hits the deck, he wants a penalty but the referee waves it away.

We'll be going to penalties if this finishes 1-1.

Barcelona 2 - 1 Arsenal - Suarez

90 mins: GOAL! He's done it!

Luis Suarez wins it for Barcelona, there's no way back for Arsenal. That should be the 42nd Joan Gamper Trophy for the hosts.

A fairly straight ball down the middle and Suarez watches the ball over this shoulder and volleys it into the back of the net.

Arsenal have three minutes to get an equaliser.

Barcelona 2 - 1 Arsenal

They don't get it. Chambers has a half chance to score but does nothing with the ball. The final whistle goes and Barcelona are the victors!

This is what they were playing for. The Joan Gamper Trophy. Barcelona will lift it for the 42nd time.

Arsenal were decent in attack and had a very good first half but after the break they succumbed to mistakes in defence and Barcelona made them pay.

It could only be one man who would win the game for Barca, and that man was Luis Suarez in the dying embers of the game.
