Mason Mount rues missed chances in Chelsea’s ‘tough to take’ defeat against Newcastle

Seventy per cent possession and 19 shots to seven, but the Blues were still on the wrong side of the scoreline

Chelsea suffered a frustrating late defeat at Newcastle on Saturday, losing 1-0 in stoppage time at St. James’ Park despite having dominated the entire 90 minutes.

Frank Lampard‘s side remain fourth in the Premier League table, but their inconsistency has allowed teams below them to close the gap to the Champions League places.

Several issues seem to stem from an inability to score at key times, which Mason Mount feels was on show again against the Magpies.

The Blues attempted to cross, press and bludgeon their way through, but Newcastle stood firm before scoring late on through Isaac Hayden.

“It’s a tough one to take,” Mount told the club website. "Even a draw we would have been disappointed with.

“We had a lot of possession, we created a lot of chances, but when we score no goals we can’t say anything.

“They did unbelievable to defend the whole game, making blocks, winning tackles, and in football anything can happen. They then go to the other end of the pitch late on and score.”

Mount says the players are aware of the issue they face to rectify not scoring enough goals, but feels the team is working hard and attempting to earn results the right way.

He also praised Newcastle’s efforts and acknowledged that fortune plays a part.

“We spoke after the game and we thought we gave everything we could.

“I thought we created loads of chances. In some other games we didn’t create as many. We had some shots on target, but when the team are defending that well and that deep it’s hard to break them down.

“We had a lot of possession. They had a lot of bodies behind the ball. We put crosses in, they defended it, so we need to look at what ways we can maybe add to our game to score these goals. It was hard for us to get the ball in the areas we want and create chances.

“Credit to them that they defended so well, I thought we gave it our all and worked hard throughout the game, but in football anything can happen.
