Ilkay Gundogan’s former manager says he disagreed with Jurgen Klopp over midfielder’s best position

A haul of 13 goals in all competitions places the German as joint-top scorer alongside Raheem Sterling for City

Ilkay Gundogan’s talent was never in question, but his best role on the pitch has been subject to plenty of discussion over the years - which started long ago with his manager at Bochum, Michael Oenning, and Jurgen Klopp.

The now-Liverpool manager had Gundogan as a key part of his side at Borussia Dortmund, where he most frequently played as a deeper midfielder or in a box-to-box role.

But Oenning told Goal.com that he had always seen him as he is now with Manchester City: a more attack-minded option capable of goals.

“I could see the fire in his eyes. I had no doubts that he would reach his aims,” the former Bochum boss said.

“For me, Ilkay is and was a No.10. I often argued with Jurgen Klopp about his best position, but he made him into one of the best defensive midfielders.”

Gundogan also played that deeper role for Pep Guardiola at City many times, before a recent shift with more offensive responsibilities has seen the German international score 11 Premier League goals since mid-December, making him the club’s top scorer in that competition this season.

Guardiola has long relied on his midfielder to play key tactical roles, whatever the position, and Oenning says he had a similar relationship with Gundogan.

“From the first moment, we had a special relationship. I trusted him 100 per cent and he understands immediately what I want from him on the pitch.

“He feels totally free and he learns very quickly. I think he would like to hear that he is a mixture of Xavi and Iniesta, two players he loves most. Ilkay has this instinct for football that you can’t learn.”

Gundogan had been sidelined recently with an injury but is expected to be involved as City face Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League on Wednesday.
