Harry Kane should stay at Tottenham and allow club to prove ambitions, says ex-Arsenal defender Martin Keown

England skipper has a long-term deal with the north London club, who have said they don’t intend to sell

Harry Kane‘s future remains subject to speculation amid rumours of a transfer to Manchester United, but he should stay at Tottenham Hotspur for now, says Martin Keown.

The former Arsenal centre-back sees stability as key for the striker at this time, as he recovers from another injury, rather than needing to prove himself at a new club.

Kane is rated at up to £200 million by some, but Spurs have shown no inclination to sell and he has four years left on his contract.

Rather than pushing for a move, Keown says he needs to let Spurs show him he can win the titles he craves at the club he already calls home.

“My initial reaction is that, for the time being, Kane should stay at Tottenham,” Keown said to Sportsmail.

“He needs nurturing back to his best after his injury. He needs games, the support of those around him and perhaps some patience. He will get that with Tottenham.

“Maybe in six months’ time, once he’s back to banging in goals, then we can revisit the topic of his future. We can also assess whether Spurs are looking any more ambitious under Jose Mourinho. For now, I say Kane should stay.”

Former Liverpool and Spurs midfielder Jamie Redknapp concurred, citing the relatively recent arrival of the Tottenham boss who has proven his ability to win trophies in previous seasons.

“With Mourinho having only taken over in November, I’d give Tottenham the summer’s transfer window to prove their ambition to [Kane]. If they make progress, then maybe he will stay for longer.”

The 26-year-old striker has netted 17 goals in all competitions this season and has 32 in 45 caps at international level.
