Wayne Rooney is understood to be on course to play in this weekend's Manchester derby.

The Manchester United captain was seen limping earlier this week during a commercial event, raising concerns over whether he would be ready for the game against Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday.

With Radamel Falcao having missed United's last two games and struggling to return to full fitness, Louis van Gaal will have been desperate for Rooney to be available. He looks set to get his wish.

The England captain is understood to have trained as normal the rest of this week, suggesting Van Gaal will be able to throw the 29-year-old straight back into action following his three-game suspension.

Prior to his daft kick at Stewart Downing that led to his recent ban, Rooney had been in excellent form, scoring six goals in 10 games for club and country. He'll be hoping to add to his already record tally of 11 goals in Manchester derbies this weekend, and with it seek to end City's three-game winning streak over their nearest rivals.

The match kicks off at 1.30pm on Sunday.
